Its really not all bad. I get to read OCN all day on a slow day since its helping me get experience. And look at hardware all day too. I do enjoy it, just not on bad days.

I guess being a computer tech for regular customers isn't as great as it sounds...
I added the bold part. If you're on a helpdesk or internal IT for a mid-size to large business, it's not bad at all. You only have to deal with a couple configurations of the same hardware, as opposed to hundreds of configs on hundreds of different hardware combinations. Lastly, you're not taking anyone's money (other than what's in your budget) so no one can yell at you because you are taking too long / used expensive parts / etc.

Good idea. I might just have to look into that. But gotta tough out the yelling for the time being.

How's this job going?
You're absolutely fine. You'll get the hang of it and soon almost every problem you get you'll be able to answer it off the top of your head. When I started my actual career job (programming) I was way over my head. I didn't know any of the concepts and methods of how they do business and the syntax for ASP.NET so here I am catching up on all that while being bombarded with projects. It's tought, but it'll pass. Just stick with it.

When I started as a technician at a retail store, Google was my best friend. Something I didn't know, I looked it up, and learned something new. In this business, you learn new things all the time, and eventually, you get into the rhythm of things.

This.

But it also really depends on where you work. The first PC shop I worked for was awful awful awful, and I didn't last more than a month. The boss was a cheap, scamming pile of douche who got mad at me for basically trying to do the right thing for customers. He was more concerned with immediate profit than building long-term trust-based relationships with clients.

The second place I worked for was great, and I'd still be there today if I hadn't moved on to my real career.

I say you stick with it for as long as you can, and then use the experience to get work at another store, or freelance.

its like when you first experience pc trouble.

if its something new and unheard of then you will have trouble solving it, and if you cannot solve it, then the people asking for help will complain (coz they're annoyed that they have the issue, not because its you)

If i called technical support and i was in trouble with my pc(maybe using it for something serious for once ..) and i couldnt get instant help, i'd prolly get a bit annoyed too. dont take any complaints personal.

And yeah as mentioned, its just in the beginning. ask your boss / whatever about it, if the previous tech support guy where working at your pace when you started. Most likely the answer will be yea. and you will find that he'd rather have you comfortable in the beginning, than whipping you into speed. (unless your boss is an ass)
