e-e My raid just failed... Drives dying? - Page 3

When I ran Windows, I needed drives the be the fastest possible. But I didn't want to lose data.

So I striped my drives (stop saying driveRs) and created regular backups and images. Err, wait, I had everything redirected to the servers so Windows crashing was virtually a non-issue. And it was fast (for windows ahahaha)

Nope.... there is a better approach.

RAID10 and RAID1 double the cost of storage and only provide redundency. Redundency is not a form of backup.

You never want an OS/app partition on an onboard RAID5 due to latency due to parity overhead.

Daily backups are actually backups. Use a seperate drive and copy your data on a schedule.
I know this... But BOTH of my seagate drives have issues...

1 has 2 reallocated sectors
the other has unrecoverable errors. 2 drives 2 I wouldn't be as mad if 1 drive had an issue, but for both of them? Come on!

Both my WD drives are about as old and I have no issues with them at all. I have had these drives for 2 years...

Update - did some more searching and googling, and it looks like my drives are fine, but I want to make sure. Still I am a little upset and I think I took my anger out wrong at seagate (sorry ). Anyway, can anyone tell me if I should be worried or not?

And here is drive 2. This one I am sure is bad, but want to make sure. It is what broke my RAID0

Drive 2 looks a little funny. Problem is, Seagate drives always report bogus values for several of the most interesting attributes, so it's impossible to say for sure. Unfortunately if you RMA the drive now, Seagate will most likely test it as OK and send it back to you.

One other thing I noticed is that the drives are reporting a very high power cycle count and start/stop count, relative to their power-on time. Did you remember to disable power management for the drives? Or have you been rebooting your computer thousands of times?

If I were you, I would go ahead and recover any data you want from the drives while they're still spinning, and replace them with new drives. Then use the old drives for unimportant crap until they finally die (or at least throw an RMA-worthy error).

I cannot recover the date... All the programs I have tried...ask for an image e-e I don't have one.

The only information that I really lost were games saves and my steam folder. There were some music and pictures that were lost as well, but they can easily be had again. :/ I knew this crap was going to happen, I just didn't know when. For now I think I am just going to go with a single drive or through these into RAID1, probably the later is best.

Did you try booting from a Linux CD with fakeRAID support? e.g. a Fedora Live CD?

There were some music and pictures that were lost as well, but they can easily be had again. :/ I knew this crap was going to happen, I just didn't know when. For now I think I am just going to go with a single drive or through these into RAID1, probably the later is best.

Anyone mention runtime.org yet?

Tried doesn't work. Tried Fedora... doesn't work...

I just ended up reformating both drives and sticking them into RAID0 for now. Once I get a 750GB WD Black, I will be tossing these guys into extra drives and use them only when needed.
