[Toms] New 3DS Suffering 'Black Screen of Death' *Updated*

Nintendo's new 3DS handheld gaming system has finally landed here in the States, officially launched as of 12am Sunday morning (or to some, early Saturday evening). But just hours after its release, reports began to surface that the portable console is suffering what's called the "Black Screen of Death."

According to reports, the problem isn't related to specific games, but rather happens at any time no matter what's inserted or not inserted: when playing online, when accessing the menu system, playing a game offline, etc. Once the device crashes, both screens go black and a message in white appears in the bottom window, telling the user that an error has occurred.

"Hold down the POWER Button to turn off the power," the message reads," then turn it on and try again. If the problem persists, please contact your customer support center. For contact details, check the Operations Manual or visit support.nintendo.com."

Reports have indicated that this simple hard reboot works just fine, allowing the user back into the system without additional problems. Other customers have reported that the message loops or happens repeatedly, thus forcing them to return the 3DS to the retailer in exchange for a new unit.

[CVG] Nintendo responds to 3DS crashes

Quote:
Nintendo has responded to reports of a 3DS error message that seemingly renders the console unusable.

On the subject of the error message, which has been dubbed the 'black screen of death', Nintendo issued the following statement to The Inquirer:

"Our recommendations are that if anyone is experiencing any problems with their Nintendo 3DS console, we recommend that in the first instance they download and install the latest system update, now available online.

"If the problems still persist we recommend they contact their local Nintendo Customer Service centre to investigate the problem."

The 3DS got its first EU system update on Friday.

That sucks, Nintendo usually makes pretty solid handhelds. But the good thing is the DS XLi or whatever it's called should be cheaper due to the release of the 3DS. biggrin.gif

I'm anxious to see what the cause turns out to be. Usually Nintendo's quality is great.

If you're planning on getting a DS, get a DSi.

XL HAS a bigger screen, albeit not a higher resolution.

Nawt good.

They really had to go an name it the Black Screen of Death already? At this stage in the game, without any insight into just how many people are affected, giving the system its own "of Death" only serves to associate it with the widespread RRoD, possibly blowing the situation out of proportion and worrying folks.

The entire month it's been out in Japan and we're just hearing about it a day after the North American/European launch. I wouldn't work myself in a tizzy just yet, though it sucks for those that have gotten it.
