Will my 550w PSU support my upcoming build?

post #1 of 42

Hey everyone,

Well ive been playing allot of bad company 2, and I noticed the huge bottleneck by my e4500 on my gtx 275(drops to 28fps on crowded places even on low settings), so i thought that i might need to upgrade my processor. So given the fact that im low on budget, and i can only afford a core 2 quad and wont have enough cash to buy a new PSU, im wondering if my current PSU will support both my gtx 275 and my new upcoming processor(maybe a Q8300, not planning to oc).

Current/Upcoming Specs
GIGABYTE GTX 275 896MB no-oc
GIGABYTE Superb550P 550w
4gb 800mhz ram
E4500 2.20ghz no-oc =>to> Q8300
Foxconn 45gm =>to> ASRock G31m-S

So will my 550w PSU support the new parts that im going to buy(Q8300+ASRock G31m-s)?

Minimum recommended for the gtx275 is 550W. I would say that you would be fine, but from this review, you should probably get a better PSU even if you don't upgrade.

Quote:
Superb 550P is a decent low-end 450 W unit if you pull between 180 W and 270 W from it, when its efficiency touches 80%. On other load patterns, however, efficiency is too low, preventing us from recommending this unit.

Another thing that counts against this unit is Gigabyte labeling it with its peak power. This, by itself, we think should be illegal everywhere in the world. And to make things worse we couldn’t pull 550 W from it.

Haven't had any problems with my superb550p yet man, so i guess ill use it then. Seen allot of other reviews about this psu, and i think its pretty ok. So do you think it'll be ok when i convert to a q8300?

If you're ok with it, I guess go for it. I wouldn't recommend it, but it's your call. If nvidia is stating the minimum to run that card is 550W and that PSU can only give 450W at most, there might be a problem in the future. Also, you're going from a dual core to a quad, so that will require more power. Just keep in mind, the PSU is the most important part of your PC. Too much stress on it and not only can it die, but it can take along every other part with it as well.

Not with that PSU. With a good one yes, but that one is far from being a good one. If you can't afford a better PSU then you can't afford a new cpu.

aw... thats unfortunate. i guess its time to check the receipt if i can get a refund or an exchange then. But even so, I saw some folks having gtx 460's on a 450w PSU while using a decent c2quad... Please explain?

gtx 460 minimum requirement is a 450W PSU. And it was probably a decent PSU that could actually put out close to 450, and not 100W less.

There is a HUGE difference between a GOOD 450 watt PSU that can put out a little more than the 450 watts it is rated for and a cheap 550watt (or higher) PSU that can't put out it's rated wattage without failing. Go read this JonnyGuru review on the DiabloTek 1050 (supposedly 1,050watt psu) to see what I mean. There are some that are even worse. I seriously doubt that poc 550watt psu can even put out 450 watts and still be in spec voltage and ripple wise.

A 5770 can easily run on a quality 300w PSU.

All we're trying to do is keep your build safe. We don't like seeing the "My PSU died and took my system with it" posts. We give you our advise in order to protect you and your hardware.

I would say look for a new PSU before you do anything else with upgrading.
Once you'd got that done, try overclocking a bit.
