LOL! Nevertheless, he said that he went back to "normal" settings, so i bet he can maintain a stable rig WHILE using the superb 550p. And yeah, sorry if im defending my superb 550p, really just cant afford more new pc parts except for the cpu+mobo combo. Just in utter confusion right now

It might be able to handle running at stock clocks while web surfing, word processing, and other things that put a light load on the system. But once the system is stressed it will either become unstable, stop working, or both.

And you have that last part wrong. If you can't afford a GOOD QUALITY PSU you definitely can't afford the new cpu+mobo. It's that simple. The basis and heart of a computer is the PSU. Without that everything else is just a waste. What can't afford to NOT replace that PSU otherwise you'll be replacing the cpu, mobo, vid card, and who knows what else when the one you have now goes up in smoke taking them with it.

I've never understood the mind set of buying top of the line cpu, mobo, ram, graphics cards, hard drives, etc, then trying to get by with a cheap, piece of crap PSU, It just amazes me that people are that ignorant, foolish, and just plain stupid.

Go read this JonnyGuru review on the DiabloTek 1050 (supposedly 1,050watt psu) to see what I mean. There are some that are even worse. I seriously doubt that poc 550watt psu can even put out 450 watts and still be in spec voltage and ripple wise.

It isn't great, but it certainly isn't as bad as you're trying to make it out to be. It's an ok-ish 450w. Comparing it to a Diablotek is ludicrous.

@OP It should work, but just don't run LinX/Furmark simultaneously.

My 600 watt powers:

Q6600 @ 3.2 ghz 100% load folding for 2 months
wd 640 aaks raid 0 + samsung f3 1tb backup
8800 gts 512 100% load folding for 2 months
8800 gts 320 100% load folding for 2 months
DVDRW
4 gigs ram

So I would imagine a decent 550 could handle one card easily

Yes, but that 550 is a far cry from being a decent 550. It's barely a mediocre 450. It might be able to handle it at stock clocks for a few weeks, but it won't handle OC'ing or heavy usage for very long.

And GameBoy, I know it isn't as bad as the DiabloTek, but it's a lot worse than you are trying to make it out to be.

Alot of people said the OCZ 600 wasn't a good psu and had "ripple issues"

I've had nothing but good luck out of it for over 4 years
post #18 of 42
The problem is that even with a series that is known to be low quality and have high failure rates there will be a few that hold up better and work well enough for a longer period of time. That doesn't mean that it's a good idea to recommend them or to not recommend that people with them replace them with something better. It's just not worth the risk.

Gigabyte make psu?
Wow, I guess it cant be THAT bad if it has their name on it?

Wrong.
Its not a 550w, its a 450w. The 550w is peak power, meaning any load above that would result in a bang!

And looking at reviews it seems pretty bad, not even managing 550w and with super low efficiency.

'Cause your current rig isn't drawing more than 300W. Assuming you've kept the same kind of budget from rig to rig I doubt you've ever drawn more than 350W from that PSU.

To be fair, I haven't seen the 600W GXS unit reviewed. The 1010W was a steaming pile of dookie, though.
