You could just get 2 570's or 2 6950 2gb's for the price of the 590. They outperform the 590, and the 6950 has a ludicrous amount of vram if you're thinking of hitting a wall with high res triple-monitor gaming.
What? No. I'm not mad their drivers didnt give more FPS boosts. If you actually READ what I said - it screwed mine and many other's cards up. It made my 4870x2 into a single 4870.

And no, I'm not getting SLi or Crossfire. Those aren't an option in my case or else I would've mentioned them. Not to mention, the "outperformance" of the Sli and Crossfire is stupidly exaggerated especially in a price comparison. Not to mention if you toss in watercooling which doubles it.

I never said that. I said that a long time ago, there ceased to be any point in updating drivers for 4xxx series cards, as the drivers had already been tweaked and optimized to their peak for the 4xxx architecture, and drivers past that point were even slightly worse as ATi made slight changes (and extra bloat) for better 5xxx performance. This peak 4xxx performance driver likely happened before they stopped giving a damn about 4870x2 drivers, which is the driver which apparently borked your card. I won't comment further than this on screwing your card up, but I would think a BIOS flash would fix any issue they possibly could've caused, unless it somehow overheated some piece of hardware somehow... I'm speculating and talking outta my ass, so I'll leave it be.

Every bench I've seen puts the single GPU (in SLI/Xfire) counterparts ahead of the dual GPU, and it makes complete sense because the cards, based on their specs, essentially ARE SLI/xfire of said cards on a single card, with reduced clocks to combat the input wattage and heat. If you're watercooling though, I totally get it, as the GPUs put on the dual GPU cards are cherrypicked, and watercooling makes heat a non-issue, so they should be able to hit higher clocks than the single GPU variants.

I'd say u get 2x of 6970 and they will outperform the GTX590 for less of the price. I think the 6970 is around $300 a piece nowadays depend on brand.

Right now if I were buying a card I'd go with an Asus ATI, my new EVGA 570 is supposed to better than my previous Asus 5870, but the 5870 was smoother for sure. Add the better scaling of the 6xxx series and that's where I personally would start looking.

Again, no idea if that attitude applies to the mega-cards though.

Good Luck OP
If you think about it HD 5870 was faster then GTX470 and GTX570 is a bit faster then GTX470 so HD 5870 in average is not far behind and depending on the game it can be faster.

Omega, something noone has pointed out yet is your monitor. you will benefit more from the 590 at stock clocks than the 6990 at stock. the main thing the 6990 has(2gb) is pointless at 1920x1080. also as you pointed out already amd only takes care of 2 generations at a time and really it's truly 1.5 gen at a time. when they stop making the 6990, they will steady stop supporting it and the gtx 590 will still be getting supported AND have the mature drivers it's currently in desperate need of.

The driver that borked the cards were a problem for alot of people at the SAME time with the SAME driver. It didn't happen before they stopped supporting it.

And BIOS flashes didn't help anyone. Like I said, when you disable crossfire - you disable crossfire and worse even force a downclock in software. That 2nd GPU does not exist in a game as far as it cares and even if it did it would be underperforming severely.

Slightly puts them ahead. Not enough to warrant the price, space, and such. And that's without an overclock and beta drivers for both the GTX590 and 6990.

Not even that though, you have to buy 2 blocks, 4 barbs, more tubing, and put more strain on your pump as well as radiator for dual cards. That's double the price of water cooling with worse temps.

Exactly. I just wish that I could get the 590 now and not a week later. If then, they might not find this damn box.

I happen to agree to an extent. Consoles dont have any of this garbage nonsense and I've been playing nothing but consoles for the past 6-7 months. Been great, not a problem, and it's just as good in many cases if not better.
