I may be moving out...FINALLY! (DSL Opinion)

So I want to move out to this apartment which is very nice and a great price.

Although I may have found the reason it is so cheap.

It is an isolated old house that sits off a main road (Which I currently live on) That is basically split into two apartments.

No Comcast cable TV or Internet, No Verizon FIOS Internet either.

I have Verizon FIOS right now and I live on the same road this House physically resides on (Meaning the front door and the mailbox faces the main road)

Anyway the postal address to this house is different form the main road. (I assume due to the fact that the road must have been changed YEARS ago)

So all I have is Verizon DSL available to me at this new place 3/1.5...I do not come from an age where DSL was even available to me. I skipped to cable and then as soon as FIOS was available I never looked back.

I currently have a 20/5 Line with FIOS. I will have access to this same line, since it is a family members house and I will be able to leave my servers and seed boxes here.

Is a 3/1.5 DSL Line a viable option to use for Avid gaming and internet surfing.

This may be the sole reason I do not take the apartment. So please give me your feedback.

Thank you,

No offense but this must be the first time moving out on your own. DSL is no reason to stay with your parents. FIOS is great but so is DSL. If you can leave your seedbox on FIOS that DSL is definitely quick enough for gaming and web browsing.

Well, I do not live with my parents, just a closer family member who had room to spare.

I have 0 personal experience with DSL and after being on FIOS I was even hesitant to be with Cable.

Having DSL as my only option saddens me.

3/1.5 is fine for gaming as such

i'd say even 1/1 would be fine for actual gameplay online

it really just depends on the ping you get.

How far is the house from the apartment? With some decent antenna work you could be able to use the FIOS for downloading but probably not gaming because of latency/lost packets.

Get a LAN cable from your old house to the new apartment, job done xD
EDIT: Jokes apart, for normal gaming and browsing you shouldn't worry about it.

The house is 0.9 of a mile from apartment.

I appreciate the feedback. I feel more comfortable leaving my FIOS behind now.

Although I do say that FIOS is a sweet sweet drug, which it will be painful to take away.

When I was living with my family I was spoiled by the Cable at 12+mbps. It was SOOO nice! I found a house out in the boonies for cheap and decided to rent it for a year to see how I liked it. I only have DSL and it would cost me $2900 in construction to get cable service. While it is not too bad, it is sometimes annoyingly slow. The MAX speed I have been able to download constantly at is 320kbs. I have not seen it go any ware north of that for anything over 15 seconds. There is no point in using any kind of a download accelerator as 1 line maxes out the download rate. This is with Qwest’s 1.5-3.0mps service that I pay WAY too much for!

But the internet is the last thing that should discourage you from finding a place of your own. It is very nice not having to worry about other people in the house!

Edit: Just to throw a little more information in there.
By myself on Bad Company 2, and other FPS I average about 80 -100 ping.
With 1 of my friends over playing together on the same server my ping is about 110-120

My cousin next door is running 4 computers. While playing any kind of a FPS such as HL2 DM, COD BO, BC2, No one can surf YouTube as it will choke the hell out of the bandwidth and ping will skyrocket.

I'm supposed to be getting 5+MB/s down for what I pay, but since I have a 5 year old modem I'm replacing soon, I rarely get higher than 1MB/s down.

You should be fine.

80 ping...in my book that's a lagger...anyone who has a ping difference of 50 from me is lagging.

I run anywhere from 6-40 ping. I only play east coast Dedicated servers. I have high standards, Verizon owns the east coast making it an amazing experience that I never have lag.

I will just have to live with a terrible DSL latency, until FIOS is available.
