From memory:
Sandy Bridge (i3-2100T?): 23.973
GT 430: 23.972
HD 5450: 23.978

I think the above values are from a review on Missing Remote or Green Button. Not so sure which. Meh, can't say I notice the issue. I don't think any of our TV's are even capable of 24p. I've got a Clarkdale HTPC (DH57JG+i3-530) built a year ago and so far, it's my favorite among the HTPC's in the house.

Ok. Time to necro me a dead thread.

I've read some HTPC threads and I'm still lost so I will give you must haves.

HDR function

Cable box function. ( Me using it as a cable so I can record with my HDR function, and watch TV also. I would like dual channel so I can record one, and watch the other )

No gaming functions, besides facebook surfing. Basic flash games ( Kongregate, and Newgrounds, etc. )

Wireless internet. I will most likly use the same card from main rig. I love it.

As silent as possible.

1080P HDMI out. I will use it to go to my home theater receiver. So it must be able to do at least 5.1 audio/video via HDMI.

I will be storing varius music files, videos, pictures, and other things. All different formats. Lossless will be what I will be attempting. Although it will be temporary. I do want to try my hand at some kind of server to store all such material.

I will be steaming a lot. Hulu, Netflix, and other various websites.

No need for a blu-ray. I have a PS3.

Wireless keyboard/mouse, and a remote to change the channels if possible. I don't want to mess with a keyboard/mouse while I'm in bed.

And that is all I can think of for now. I value quality, and ease of use, but it doesn't have to be super simple. I learn quite quickly. So please build me something

Thank you! Anymore questions just ask me.

Also tell what OS and software is best.

Still targeting less than $800? Here's what I would build:

Base
  • Case: Cooler Master Elite 360, $40
  • PSU: Antec EA-500D, $50 (after $20 off coupon: EMCKEKG84)
  • GPU: integrated
  • RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600 1.5V CL9, $48
  • HSF: stock
  • HDD (OS): OCZ Vertex 2 50GB, $110
  • HDD (Data): Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB, $80
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM, $100
  • Misc: Hauppauge HVR-2250 Media Center Kit, $130
  • SUBTOTAL: $558

AMD
  • MB: GIGABYTE GA-880GM-D2H, $80
  • CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 Rana 3.2 GHz, $80
  • SUBTOTAL: $160

Intel
  • MB: Asus P8H67-M LX, $89
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 3.1 GHz, $125
  • SUBTOTAL: $214

AMD Total: $718
Intel Total: $772

OS and front-end software choice is personal preference. I suggest you try them out to see what you like. Most are free, anyway, or offer a free trial. On my HTPC's, I use Windows Media Center + Media Browser. My parents have been using the HTPC for more than a year now without difficulty.

Now with the 2250 am I going to get all my channels except the PPV? I think that's what confuses me the most.

Does it also output audio/video HDMI?

Cable? That depends. You'll be able to get whatever channels your TV is getting when it's connected straight to the wall jack (no cable box). If you want all channels (barring PPV), you need to get a more expensive CableCARD-ready tuner such as the upcoming HDHomeRun Prime ($250) or Ceton InfiniTV4 ($400).

You've got a pretty big budget so I put in some niceties on the initial build list. Since you'll need to spend a greater portion of your budget on the tuners if you go the CableCARD route, you could just nix the SSD ($110 savings) and use the Samsung F4 for your OS, too. You could also opt for an Athlon II X2 instead of the X3 (~$20 savings). The power supply, you don't need 500W. If you can wait for sales, the Antec Earthwatts EA-380D and Antec NEO ECO 400C often go on sale for $35~40 ($20~30 after rebate). You might also want to consider waiting until July for Llano. Even if not for Llano itself, then for potential price cuts when it gets released. If you decide on the HDHomeRun Prime, you'd need to wait for those to become available, anyway.

Both the AMD and Intel builds support video+audio over HDMI. Caveat, the AMD build is limited to 2.1ch LPCM or 5.1ch AC3.

I will prolly be using a SSD. I have a friend in Intel Retail Edge so that will help lower my costs.

I will wait till the cablecard tuner is available. That's one my main big wants. I'd rather have my own ish then rent a cable box from Insight.

What's ACM? Or LCPM? My audio lingo is no bueno unless it's car audio. Even then it's limited.
LPCM = Linear Pulse Code Modulation (basically uncompressed audio)
AC3 = Dolby Digital

Even if you buy a CableCARD tuner, you'd still need to rent an M-Card from the cable company. It's usually cheaper than a set-top box, though. First one might even be free, and in the case of the HDHomeRun Prime, is good for 3 tuners. Technically, one M-Card can support decrypting of up to 6 streams, but the way the Prime was designed, you'd need one M-Card for every 3 tuners.

How does this combo look for a HTPC?

That actually looks pretty decent considering it includes TV tuner and Blu-ray drive. Be aware that the tuner in the combo only supports digital signals meaning you probably wouldn't be able to get all channels that your TV can pick up without a set-top box.

Edit:
Oh, hey cool, this is my 1,000th post.
