You might need a higher watt PSU than you think

Just bought a $25 energy meter to test out how many watts my system uses, it's very easy to use, just plug it directly into the wall outlet and plug your power bar cord into it, it's called Blue Planet EM100 and I got it for $25.

System specs are in sig. CPU is running at 1.28V and I also have a PCI Sound Blaster card, an NZXT Sentry LX fan controller plus 3 GT AP15s and 2 regular Corsair case fans.

Idle usage: 246W

Prime 95: 400W

Furmark: 520W

Prime 95 and Furmark: 660W

Linx: 420W

Linx and Furmark: 685W

OCCT power supply test: 615W



From the tests I did, running Linx and Furmark simultaneously used a max of ~685W. That's a lot, considering that many people suggest that running GTX 280s in SLI is okay or running a 590 or 6990 by themself is "good enough", as per the recommendation of having a minimum of a 700W PSU by the manufacturers.

I know that CPU and GPU usage never runs that high under normal gaming conditions, but it's a little scary knowing that running Furmark or Linx simultaneously could possibly damage your PSU if you're running close to the maximum load without running those programs, which I wasn't.

So what do people do? Buy higher watt PSUs so they don't risk damaging parts if they run programs like Furmark and Linx at the same time, or do they not buy a higher watt PSU and avoid running those programs altogether?

wall measured power != internal power use. The entire point of the power supply is to convert 240 VAC (or 110 if you're crazy) into usable voltages like 12 VDC. Therefore, there are efficiency losses.

that is only what is being drawn from the wall socket. Not what is being drawn from the psu, as turning from AC current to DC current as psu are not efficient enough to allow a 100% conversion of the current type. Take the efficiency rating of your psu and times that by what your getting and that is closer to the real amount of power its using.

standard in the USA is 110v, unless you make a custom line to accommodate that.

As everyone stated.... your actual system power usage is less.... assuming 85% efficency:

Linx and Furmark: 685W -> 582w

Actually, looking at your specs... it seems high. I would expect your system to use less than 400w.

Assuming 81% efficiency (typical for the TX750 at that wattage range) you're pulling about 555W from your PSU.

Nah, I'd guesstimate it around 450-500W. The GTX280 was a power hog in its day.

Can online PSU calculators be trusted? Because according to one, I need minimum of 578w and recommended 628w. I have an Antec TP-750 Blue that is 80+ bronze, and am upgrading to SB this week.

Will I have enough power?

You'd be fine even with Crossfire, and could maybe manage Tri-fire at a stretch (though I wouldn't recommend it).
