New AMD build, need suggestions and advice

Thread Starter
I'm getting ready build a new rig and I need to get some opinions on it. I'll be using this PC to do a little photoshop and play SCII. Its going to be a mATX build do to the case I already own and the limited space on top of my desk. Is there anything you guys would change for something better, cheaper, etc.? I decided I won't need xfire in the future. Id like to keep the budget around $500 for the GPU, MOBO, CPU, RAM, & PSU all together. Thank you guys in advance for your help!

Heres the build:

GPU - XFX HD-587X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 - $189.99

MOBO - BIOSTAR TA890GXE AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - $99.99

CPU - AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core - $99.99

RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) - $44.99

PSU - CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 (CMPSU-600CX) 600W ATX12V v2.3 Active PFC Power Supply - $54.99

Total = $489.95 before shipping

Components I'm reusing:

SSD - Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH080G2K5 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

HDD - SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"

Case - Antec Mini P180 Advanced Super Mini Tower

Thats a very balanced rig and good for your intended use.

Only thing is that the 5770's will be harder to get now that 68xx and 69xx are out so you might struggle to get another Hawk when you do go to xfire. If you plan to xfire perhaps consider a 6850. will make easier to get another later.

5770 isnt worth $100 imo, the 4850 is better and was $47ar

Athlon II x4 645 + Patriot Signature 1600Mhz 2x4GB memory - $193
ASUS 6850 + M4A87TD EVO - $255, $235 AR
HEC Blitz - $40
Antec Earthwatts 500W - $50 after promo [see link]

Original PC cost (minus parts already have): $528
Total cost of these parts: $538, $518 AR

For just about the same cost +/- $10, you get the benefit of twice the RAM (which should largely benefit photoshop) and a 6850 (much better GPU). Note hat the M4A87TD EVO might limit CrossfireX choices down the road and so would the PSU, in which case you may want to switch to:

6850 + M4A79XTD EVO - $274, $244 AR
Antec EA-650 Green - $65

I ran that case for a while, but eventually switched it out for a mid-tower so I would have more room to grow.

I'm running that exact motherboard with an 1100T and have not had any problems. It doesn't seem to run as hot as most people claim and I couldn't be happier.

Looks like a good system, but I would look into another video card like the others have mentioned.

Thanks guys, I've switch out most of the components and added a budget of $500 to this build. What do you guys think? Is XFX a good choice to pick for the 6850 or should I go with a different brand? Is 600W enough power for everything?

Get this hd 5870 instead, much faster than hd 6850 and only $170 after rebate. The deal should be gone in matter of hours I think

You can save $40 bucks getting a cheaper board. There's a biostar board with USB 3.0 and sata 3 for $60 on today's newegg's shellshocker (3:00pm - 6:00pm PST) the board name is TA870U3+. Together you saved quite a few for a better CPU

600w is plenty for this setup. You should get the 1055t with the extra money because it'll help you pretty much with photoshop
