Asus DCII 2GB HD6950 or Asus DCII GTX570

I am bring my old phenom ii x3 rig out of retirement as i need 2 sets of pcs for work, gonna move my gtx470 in the phenom rig, so looking for a new card for my sig rig.
the 2 cards in the title are ones i am currently considering, i like asus (good after sales) and the dcii range cards as i heard they run cool and fairly quiet (good overclockers too) which is exactly what i want for my system.
i know at stock clock the 570 beats 6950 fair and square, but does cost about £50 or so more. i am not planning on a huge overclock or run multicard setup any time soon. i game on my 22' 1680x1050 dell at the moment so a single card is more than enough, will be getting dell's u2311 within a year time though.
i was considering the reference 6950s too, as i heard the early models were unlockable to 6970s, but it seems they're getting less and less unlockable these days, not sure if its worth the risk of going for a reference design. if it turned out unlockable, also runs hotter and louder than the dcii version, i'd be pretty gutted!
my comfortable budget is at 6950 price point (something like £225ish), but if you guys think the 570 is a better buy, then i guess i could stretch my budget towards £300 (not ideal, but i'd do it if its worth it).
any inputs welcomed, thanks in advance wink.gif

My HD 6950 Unlocked and Overcloked hits about 73C after 2-3 hours of Crysis @ 56% fan speed. Dont have any experience with DCII but they seem to OC higher and run cooler but if you go HD 6950 you lose the unlock. I would just get GTX570 if you need every last fps but if not get the HD 6950. It should do ~ 1050 - 1100Mhz core if it OCes anything like HD 6970 DCII.

which 6950 did you get if you don't mind me asking? if im gonna get any other version of 6950, i wanna be pretty damn sure that it unlocks, otherwise i'm sticking with the asus dcii.

i heard the 6950s has better crossfire scalings than 570s in sli, i don't want to change the card for about 2 or 3 years, the only upgrade path i will take is sli or cf.

regarding performance of 570 over the 6950 at stock, the 5ish fps in games doesnt bother me that much, i can live without the 5fps, and i won't be over the moon if i get 5fps more either. however, as i also use a lot of 3d apps, the cuda cores do come in handy. then again, i will have my 470 in the old rig doing exactly that, but every now and then i will be using both my systems for work...i hate options!

i have plenty of room for 3 slot cards, even 2xsli or cf.

i thought the asus dcii hd6950 is 3 slots too right? the link is in czech, i work in prague at the moment tongue.gif

It's a 2 slot, looking at newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121437&cm_re=6950-_-14-121-437-_-Product

That being said, I'd get the 570 if I were you, I love mine, rocks most games. Can't be too courageous with the OC, unless you're ok with an RMA if you burn out a VRM.

Plus, you get physx and it's cool/quiet. I can't say how the 6950 is in comparison, as I've never had one, or used one personally.

interesting, didn't know there is a 2 slot version too, perhaps its new, i'm sure the first dcii ones were 3 slots just like the 6970s.

to be honest i don't think i will overclock too much, if any at all, if i want performance down the road, i'll just get a second card. i like my sytem to be quiet and cool, i just can't justify overclocking gpus for that 5-10fps, in return you get loads of heat and noise, but perhaps the gtx5xx and the hd69xx cards are better at handling heat and noise when overclocked?

have you overclocked your 570? or do you even feel the need to?

EDIT: just saw your sig, so you did overclock your 570, 850mhz, over 100mhz over reference clock, i'd say that's the max i would overclock a gpu

Yea, and I forgot that you're considering the DirectCUII gtx570, which has the VRM issue fixed, and runs cooler than stock. But, doens't leave room for SLI, I think. The 570 is a 3 slot version.

Do note that with the 570's, a stock one puts out most of the heat out the back of the case, while the directCU will vent a good bit inside the case.

I'm happy with my overclock (I have a reference model), some people get them to 900 core, but with a reference card 850 is an easy OC and comfortable for me. doesn't get too hot, and isn't that loud. I like it.

Actually I own a dcu2 hd 6950. And it is unlocked with a modified bios really easy so I have 1536 unified shaders and 930/1350 I had it at 950/1350 but a lil unstable. Nice card though

Bump the voltage to 1.375v and you'll probably see some serious clocks.
