Steam makes it easy to get into the beta program for Maxis' Spore spin-off Darkspore. Just head to the Steam web site and install. Darkspore was recently delayed until the end of April.
Seems it'll be available for a week, until the 4th of april.

Almost done downloading it. Has anyone else tried it yet?

As a long time Spore player and fan of Maxis, I think I will give it a shot. Downloading the Beta as I'm writing this.

I played the beta a while ago. The game did not wow me at all.

Hey Pash, as far as the core elements go, is it sort of like Spore? Just wondering because the one part of Spore that I loved the most was the unlimited customization of your creatures.

It seems like " meh"

I didn't play for that long, but the game reminded me more of League of Legends or Heroes of Newerth, and not Spore at all. I don't know, maybe there's some hidden depth to the game that I couldn't uncover, but that was my first impression (same top down view, you control one character, you fight hordes of easy minions, and you can swap your character out for another one).

Meh..... Guess I'll check it out when it finishes downloading. I've played LoL and that's decent for a F2P game, but it's limited in my opinion. Thanks for the heads up though

See, I bought Spore because I had read all the pre-launch hype about how open-ended the creation process would be. Also, in the beginning of the talk about Spore they had mentioned that your critters would evolve based on stimuli that you put in the environment. Neither were the case.

I felt that I invariably ended up with very similar critters, as certain traits just lead to a more successful evolution. And there was no autonomous evolution at all.

So, that being said, I don't think that I will spend money on another iteration of it; however free Beta is free and an open mind can be changed.
