[Netflix] Netflix Lowers Data Usage By 2/3 For Members In Canada

Pretty cool. This should also help with my University's stupidly slow WiFi.


Although the predicted overage charges that everyone was worried about failed to happen. We got that crap suspended and now Shaw dropped their $2/GB overage. I'm currently 21GB over my monthly cap and they could care less.

caps on bandwidth are stupid, im sure if Dish or other cable companies capped tv service there would be an uproar.

I use Shaw and they couldn't care less if I use 300GB+ a month.

No need for this with my 15MB line!

It's about time. Not being able to switch to a lower resolution was causing me headaches.

I forsee this getting ugly. Canadian ISPs may have other reasons (none that I can see are good) for capping b/w usage, but AT&T is capping their b/w usage in order to hurt competing video content delivery services (Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, etc) so that they can push their own content.

I can see AT&T justifying setting their b/w caps lower if Netflix doesn't take up so much b/w.

Actually, had that stupid metered internet bill stayed around they would have charged you an extra $400/month just because they could.

If they could care less, then there is room for them to care less. I believe you meant: couldn't care less.

This is a good move on part of Netflix. Now if only we managed to make Internet in Canada affordable everywhere. UBB, and the new version they want to put in of it, is simply price gouging. It costs them pennies and they charge us big dollars. Not to mention, they put all the money they make from it into their cellular service rather than their infrastructure... Damn Bell, if you did what you are supposed to do with the government subsidized infrastructure we could have a world-leading internet...
