contract about to run out

Hey guys,

been a long-time Overclock.net lurker/user, but haven't been posting too much.

Today though has come the day where I'd really like you guys' help.

I'm currently on a family plan with Verizon, but it's running out at the beginning of next month.

Long story short, I finally want a smartphone. I currently work as an iPhone developer, and because of that the last thing I want is an iPhone. The openness of the Android platform on the other hand really intrigues me, so I'd like one of those.

I'm totally new to smartphones though, so I have no clue what would be a good phone, what carriers are considered good, what is a decent data plan, etc.

Could I get OCN's help on this one? Help out a newbie to smartphones?

tl;dr: new to smartphones... what do?

Thank you guys so much!

Andy

I had an iphone for the longest time, and also made the switch to verizion.

Its mostly about personal preference, Do you want a larger 4'' screen? If so consider the thunderbolt or the Droid X, if you want smaller, consider the droid 2 or droid incredible.

Theres SO MANY CHOICES.

The 4" screen would definitely be nice. I'll have to read up some more on the X.

As for carriers, what would you guys choose? Or I guess I could just get an upgrade at Verizon... I really don't know how all this stuff works.

I might not even need a data plan, most of the time when I'm not driving I'm somewhere where I have internet access, and hooking up to standard wireless shouldn't be a problem for these phones, right?

I had an iphone 2G for about 18 months and have just upgraded to a Dell Streak. After seeing one in a shop window. The 5" screen is a joy to surf on but i would suggest using Dolphin HD as your browser on android. Worth reading up on but do remember the Streak ant small.

I can't comment on the contract side as im in the uk. But Im on a pay as you go sim.
(Posted on my Dell Streak ;-) )

Ah, you have some bad timing . All the new stuff seems to be coming out in may/june.

Anyway, depending on service in your area

Sprint:
Evo 4G
Epic

Verizon:
Droid X
Droid 2
Fascinate
Thunderbolt

AT&T:
Captivate
Inspire
Atrix

They all have pros and cons. Atrix/Droid X/Droid 2 are nowhere near as hackable as the others, but if you don't plan on doing heavy rom flashing (ie, going to gingerbread while official rom is froyo, etc), then they should be fine. Atrix is the only one with a dual core. The Inspire, Evo, Epic, Fascinate, and Captivate are both great phones, very hackable. Inspire, thunderbolt, and Evo all have battery complaints, however they have some amazing build quality and 4.3" screens. The Fascinate, Epic, and Captivate will probably need a case, but they are nice and thin so a case isn't a huge bulk, and they have amazing 4" screens.

I don't mention T-mobile. I wouldn't buy any Tmobile phone that cannot work on AT&T right now, since any Tmobile phone that cannot may soon be a brick. Yes, AT&T is planning on exchanging any Tmobile phones, but do you really want to count on them giving a perfectly fair trade?

well in that case I could wait I guess, just simply let my contract continue for now. I just checked out my Verizon account, I'm available for an upgrade and an additional "loyalty discount" if I upgrade after the 5th of May... so I guess that could work.

What are some of the new phones coming out that I should pay attention to?

LG has a the Thrill 4G (a 3D phone, but to make up for that, it's got one of the best processors in the market) for AT&T. 4" screen.

Sprint has the Evo 3D (also an insanely fast dual core) on a 4.3" screen.

Verizon has the dual core Motorola Bionic, which is like an atrix, but bigger screen, less ram, and LTE. They also have a Samsung LTE phone coming, which has an improved SAMOLED+ Display, but single core.

Tmobile has a G2x, it's an LG phone, dual core, stock android. It also has AT&T bands.

I may have missed a few, but those seem like the ones to watch for. Most have release dates "by end of Q2" or end of June. That is of course not a guarantee. Hopefully more info will come about that soon.

Thanks a lot for your help man!

Guess now it's down to also researching the different carriers and their respective advantages/disadvantages.

Edit: Sprint seems to have some really cool plans... unlimited data/text/nights/weekends + 450 anytime minutes for 70 bucks... sounds pretty good to me.
