[Windows 7/8] Complete Client v7.3.6 Guide - Page 43

Quick question. I was thinking of upgrading my memory from 3Gb to maybe 4 or 8Gb. Would I see an increase in PPD? I'm hitting the 3Gb limit ATM according to task manager.

Not really; RAM speeds/timings influence PPD. The amount of RAM would only help for when you're running a VM, since you'll need more than normal. Even then, if you used native Linux, you would be fine with 3GB.

I decided to start folding on my CPU again (been folding with the GPU only for quite a long time), and made a SMP client on FAHmon V7 with 5 threads so there's one left for the GPU to make use of.

Everything's fine, the CPU is loaded at 100%, but somehow, I only get 1k PPD O_O

I'm at 3.4GHz, 100% stable, by the way smile.gif

I'm on project 8004, TPF around 1min 30secs. Folded like 6 WUs as we speak.

If it's useful in any way, the GPU still pulls 9.4k PPD like it did without the SMP client.

If it's useful in any way, the GPU still pulls 9.4k PPD like it did without the SMP client.

IMPORTANT EDIT:

If you place the GPU priority as low and the SMP priority as idle and then disable the core affinity lock for both SMP and GPU clients, you'll find that you don't need to dedicate an entire core to the GPU.  That statement was true for Nvidia cards but not for your AMD GPU. I'm sorry for the confusion.

I've never had a 8004 project before as I am not currently using the A-4 core, but instead the A-3 core. If you are positive that you have it set to -SMP 5 then the only thing that I can think of that would cause you to have such low PPD is that you have no bonus yet on that passkey. (You need to complete 10 SMP WUs on the same passkey to be eligible for bonuses.)

When I looked up that p8004 WU on http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html I noticed that it's a very short prefered deadline project and it does have a K factor of 0.75 which means it's bonus eligible. The preferred deadline is 1.64 days and you'll have one finished in 2.5 hours, which is about 6.3% of total time. According to some rough calculations, with the bonus times factored in you should be getting about 4,300 PPD on that WU with 5 cores enabled. I would guess that with all six cores working on it that you would be closer to 5,600 PPD with the bonuses.

I doubt that you would lose 1,300 PPD due to core imbalance with a GPU and all six cores threaded for SMP, so again, you might be better off with -SMP 6 and core affinity lock disabled with GPU at low and SMP at idle priority.

This above statement may be incorrect as well, as you're using an AMD video card, which I overlooked. You're probably best off with 5 cores, with core affinity lock left default (enabled) and then forcing the GPU to work on the last core which is unused by SMP and again, with core affinity lock default enabled.

My apologies for the confusion. I wasn't paying enough attention when I responded and overlooked something that is rather important.

Ok guys a little confused about which of these tweaks I can use. Running a 2500k and a 6950 both overclocked nicely. Looks like I can unlock the -bigadv WUs and maybe open up the multi threading on the GPU? that correct?

It's highly unlikely that you'll be able to finish -bigadv now with the changes that have been made. I could be wrong about this, but I don't think that a 2500K at any clock is going to finish in time now.

Yea I have come to the conclusion that I cant run -bigadv with a 4 core non hyper threading cpu currently. So many older posts I think I was probably reading from a few years ago.. anyhow I am running the advanced ones for video card and overall not sure its worth the effort. Seems without quite a bit of hassle I cant fold on both. Right now folding on both yields virtually the same as just folding on the 2500k OC @ 5ghz. The video card alone pulls slightly lower ppd. With the HP server folding going on it seems less than worthwhile to let this rig fold. We will see ...
