Nice mobo btw, didn't notice that until now but I've seen it on a few folders since I got it. I think it appeals to the "I can make a folding farm with a bajillion GPUs in it!" market. tongue.gif

I bought my motherboard with the intent to get 2 more GTX 580s for a tri-SLI project. I can't afford to drop money on them just yet, so I'm waiting for the next generation Nvidia cards to go gold and the price on the 580s to drop. I could install a fourth GPU (not in SLI mode) as a dedicated folder or a PhysX processor, I suppose. :) The motherboard has been great for overclocking, even with only one GPU in it. I'm very pleased with it. I knew nothing about folding when I bought the motherboard. :)

I am currently folding 24/7 with the console SMP client with all four of my physical cores on my 2500K. I am also folding 24/7 on my GTX 580 with the no-nonsense console client. I abandoned the v7 client because the consoles were ever-so-slightly faster for me and I found that configuring them was easier than the v7 client. (Although the v7 client was easier to set up for the first time as a newbie than the consoles were...)

By disabling the affinity lock in the GPU client, my GPU performance increased significantly and my SMP performance decreased slightly. Overall, it was a net gain for my PPD with that setup. I also do other tasks while I fold, such as working, gaming, or just web-browsing and so on a whim, I disabled the affinity lock in my CPU. SMP performance didn't seem to change at all when the PC was idle, but the performance in my other applications and the response time of my system increased dramatically by doing this. SMP performance did drop slightly when multi-tasking in non-multi-threaded applications with the affinity lock disabled as compared to having the affinity lock enabled with the same other non-multi-threaded applications running, but the responsiveness of my system was much better. SMP performance with other multi-threaded applications running improved significantly.

So for me, disabling the affinity locks in both clients seemed to be the best in that it had a minimally negative impact on SMP performance (when multi-tasking and when letting it fold by itself) and had a significant gain in GPU performance when multi-tasking and a moderate gain in GPU performance when I leave the system unattended to fold by itself.

I will point out that when I switched to running a SMP client in a 64 bit virtualbox with a 64 bit linux distro that my SMP performance increased significantly over the windows client in every situation, but my ability to multi-task was terrible and my GPU performance was incredibly variable, sometimes 1% better, but often 5-6% worse. The issue seemed to be with how much CPU time the VM was eating up and the GPU fighting it for cycle time. I probably could have limited the linux SMP client and virtual box to 3 cores and left the 4th core for the GPU (with the affinity lock re-enabled) and had better multi-tasking performance, but doing that resulted in a net loss of SMP performance compared to the 4 cores of windows SMP folding.

All of this only applies with the -advmethods flag, as the 762X WUs use very little CPU cycles and seem to be very good about playing nicely with the SMP client. The standard GPU WUs seem to eat into CPU cycles more often and more aggressively, and re-enabling the affinity lock (and even disabling one core and going -SMP 3 flagged on my 2500K) might be best if those were the WUs I was doing. Thankfully, there are still plenty of 7622 WUs to do and I'm cranking away on them.

Running the Beta version of the v7.x86 build. Is working really well and I have to say that I'm not having near the problems I was having with the 32bit app.

As far as Zip files go, it's worth buying Ultimate cause there aren't too many .zip files that I have encountered where I had to get an external app to open them. Actually none yet but... *knock on skull, throw salt over left shoulder face south to the San Francisco Bay area and genuflecting* ...there can always be a first time. At least it's more than paid for its usefulness thus far. smile.gif

So Ive done a fresh install no more log in to windows and no more permission issues. So still stuck at the same point the winzip version that came with my Asus board says it will open 7z files yet it tells me it fails and says unknown format. It shows them fine in the winzip window. Just won't write them to the folder. Sorry to be a pest but if you guys have any ideas on how I can get it working would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Ok, so I swapped out one of my systems... the p4 folder, for a q6600 with a 9500 gt.
I get the client installed, and my gpu fails citing "unstable-machine"

I have nvidia driver 280 installed...
and client v7.?.38

Should I go back another driver set?

Please help as this machine is going to run 24\7 folding

If your GPU is overclocked, reduce the clocks. If you're folding with the -advmethods flag, then you might want to bump your fan profile up for faster fans at a given temperature.

I had the 280.26 WHQL drivers and then updated to the newer 285.62 WHQL drivers and had better performance across the board for everything except 3Dmark11, which took a slight performance hit.

If you're using 280.26, it might be best to update to the 285.62 WHQL drivers, which I folded with successfully for quite a while.

I have since switched to the BETA 290.36 and then the BETA 290.53 drivers and had better performance across the board in my games (and in folding, slightly) and much better performance in BF3 (thanks to 290.36) Skyrim (thanks to 290.53) and 3DMark11 with the 290.53 BETAs.

Folding@Home worked fine for me, even with -advmethods flag, on all of those drivers.

I tried the 295.51 BETA drivers and folding finished my -advmethods WU and then went into a "downloading core" loop that never ended. I did not have a failure, I simply had folding trying to download the same core over and over again for no reason.

I reverted to the 290.53 BETA.

What settings would you guys recommend to optimize usage of a 2500k and some GTX480s.

Feel like I have been having terrible luck lately folding. HPCS boxes are all messed up, currently just folding on one 480 and the 2500k. But lately I've only been getting 14.5k ppd from the 480 (where I used to get 17k) and my 2500k is only getting a measly 1k ppd.

Use the 266.58 drivers, they have been the most stable for a long time now. As Shadowfax has said if your GPU is overclocked then test it folding on the 266.58 drivers and at stock speeds and see how it does there.

Shadowfax the advmethods 762X WUs are only for Fermi cards as far as I'm aware, which are 400 and 500 series. Just more info you might like to know is that they generally only bring a GPU PPD increase for cards at the GTX460 and up performance levels, the lower CPU time used benefit should still apply to all fermi cards that can run them.

This post should pretty thoroughly detail exactly what you need to do to set up what is in my opinion the most efficient and still usable set of clients and options for folding on a system like yours.

Thank you...with that particular client, will I need two copies? (one for each GPU)

Thanks again. +rep
