Which cpu should I get?

And why does the core i3 have a higher score on the benchmark compared to the phenom? It only has 2 cores compared to 4 and the cache sizes are smaller. How is this possible?

The i3 is on par, and in some cases better than the 955.

The i3 has a higher score because it's more efficient. The architecture is superior to the K10 architecture that AMD has been using for years.

If you can find a motherboard in stock anywhere, I'd get the i3 over the 955. Has better upgrade options. Just you cannot overclock it. Even if you have a p67 motherboard.

But that's not to say that the 955 is a bad chip, it certainly gets the job done.

I'd actually lean towards the Phenom in this case

The 2100 is a dual core with HT, not a quad, so heavily threaded things will still run better on the Phenom. Also, the 2100 isn't a K-series chip, which means very limited overclocking.

The i3 2100 beats the 955 with less cores because as already mentioned sandybridge architecture craps on phenom II.

What are you going to be doing with this rig? If encoding the phenom might be a better idea, if gaming the i3 might be a better idea.

i3-2100: 3985
955 BE: 3947

Slightest difference in performance. I'd say go for 955 because at least it's a quad while the 2100 only dual core.

seems as if the core-i3 beats the phenom in almost everything. Should I lean towards the i3 or phenom? I'm just going to be using it for regular use, photoshop, gaming

I am also kind of in the same shoes with 955, 2100 and i5 2400 :S

Leaning more towards the side 2....955 for budget and 2400 for performance. Kind of "meh" on the 2100 though.

Sandy Bridge LGA1155 is newer. However keep in mind AM3+ boards are out that will allow upgrade to the equivalent 32nm AMD FX-Series in June, the 2100 doesn't OC, and the 955 would inevitably destroy the 2100 in multithreaded apps, especially once you begin OC-ing.

Stock that is.
The 955 is easy to OC .2-.4Ghz with no worries about temps, using just the multiplier. My 955 is sitting at a comfortable 3.8Ghz right now that I bet would probably get a better score than the i3.
