Rambling thoughts about a possible new lens

So instead of grading this massive stack of papers before me, I'm running through possible changes to my lens lineup. Just looking for some feedback/encouragement/discouragement, etc.

First off, I'm going to sell some of my current lenses to fund a new lens purchase. I will definitely sell my 50/1.4 for sure, and along with that either my 70-200/4 IS or 24-70/2.8. But more than likely it will be the 70-200. It's a superb lens, but I don't use it that much. I plan using my 135L as my long lens and will eventually get a 1.4x or 2x TC to go with it.

With the proceeds from that sale, I'm thinking about the following lenses, in no particular order:
  • Canon 35/1.4L (not too expensive, but useful FL, but at the same time not exactly wide)
  • Canon 24/1.4L (pricey, but very wide angle and f/1.4, less useful as a walk around)
  • Zeiss 21/2.8 (very pricey, but legendary quality, no AF)
  • Zeiss 35/2 (not too pricey, great quality, but no AF)
  • Canon TS-E 24mm/3.5 II (pricey, no AF, and not exactly a walk around, but extremely good IQ and the PC would be nice for urban landscape shots)
  • Canon 16-35/2.8 II (it's a zoom, but still good quality)

The lens will serve as a primary landscape lens and/or walk around lens. I will still have my 24-70 (unless I sell it instead of the 70-200).

Anything else I should be considering? I'm not really considering Sigma or Tamron lenses and prefer Canon mount (not adapting other mounts).

Judging from your current lineup and perspective lineup, I would go for the 24 1.4L. Or if you are a really big spender, a 14mm 2.8L (<3).

PS: I'm looking for a 70-200 F4L IS. = )

Edit: Also check out the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM.

That's good to know! I have a matching white Canon brand tripod collar with it!

And I thought about the 16-35 II as well, but have decided that I'd really prefer a prime for this lens purchase.

The 14L is too wide for my purposes I think. I did enjoy 10mm on APS-C (16mm FF equivalent), but wouldn't want to be stuck with just that focal length.

I've also been thinking about the 70-200, but that depends on how quickly this guy can get his check to me.

Just my thoughts:

For a general purpose walkaround lens, I'd avoid the Zeiss. They're beautiful, but in my experience without a split prism or a rangefinder mechanism, they're hard to use quickly during photo walks.

I'd personally pick up the 35mm since it's in the focal range that I find most useful for walkaround. It's wide enough to easily frame subjects both indoors and out, nice large aperture, and if you ever need more reach you have some nice cropping ability on your 5D Mk II

If you ever need to go wider, I'd imagine you can use the brick for wider focal lengths, but in my experience I don't need something that wide often as a walkaround to spend that much money on a dedicated prime lens.

Good to know that I might have some prospective buyers for my 70-200! It really is without question the sharpest zoom Canon makes (excepting perhaps the 70-200/2.8 II).

But yeah, the 35L is what I'm leaning towards I suppose. I really want something lighter than my 24-70 for times that I go out with my camera and just one lens. The 35L is half the weight and a bit shorter, so it seems like good choice

And MF isn't too difficult for what I would use it for. It would be a "walk around landscape lens" to include urban, so I wouldn't be rushed in establishing focus. Plus the bright VF of my 5DII makes it easier, and Zeiss lenses are a dream to MF from what I hear (not having an AF motor to muck it up and it's well-damped focus ring).

As of now I'm thinking about offering a trade for a 35L at POTN for my 70-200 and 50/1.4, or just the 70-200 plus cash on my end (yet if anyone knows for sure that they want to buy either lens now from me, PM!).

My vote (wheres the poll?) goes to 35mm. I would keep the 70-200mm and sell the 24-70mm. This is from a purely biased opinion coming from street photographer.

Well, the 70-200 is a bit superfluous with the 135L. With a 2xTC slapped on the 135, it becomes a 270mm f/4 lens, so I think that will serve my needs as I seldom have a need for telephoto.

I haven't tried the others but I have the 35L and I LUUUUV it. Great walk around lens, I let the girlfriend (knows nothing about cameras) take the 5D2/35L combo on her family holiday and she fumed at me about how she'll never be happy with a point and shoot again lol.

A friend borrowed it for a couple days and now he's scratching his head on where to find a good deal for one after the Japanese earthquake.

If you don't buy that 24 TS, I will personally come to your house and poop on your doorstep.

What size prints do you normally make?

11x17, 8x12, 13x19. I think the TSE 24 will end up being just a bit too pricey. I would definitely get the mkII, but it's north of $2k. Gotta be able to buy whatever lens with just the sale of the 70-200 & 50.

Looking more and more like the 35L now that I've scoured flickr for samples.
