Headphones to best suite my needs??? - Page 2

You may want to also check out the audiotechnica ath-m50. They are a great set of cans and get much better sounding the more you listen to em. I share similar interests (musically), so I can say that, for instance listening to Hot Fuss yesterday in flac, it sounded phenominal, more so than that of my ath-a700. On ebay they retail ~100 bucks and about 110-170 on amazon.) These are no bigger than the 555, so they are very easy to bring with you wherever you go and they fold up. Just my 2 cents. Otherwise, I'd go with the grado sr-60i or the sonys. (I have a friend that has nothing but good things to say about the sonys you listed)

That comment makes me think of what someone who just heard a Dr. Dre Beats would say. I would say get the HD 555 and do the mods.. I actually have them and they sound pretty good.

From what I heard I would like the bright sound of the Grados the most, but I have concerns. I've never really used a pair of open back headphones, so I have to questions.

How bad is the soundstage on the Grados?

Is there a closed back headphones that could deliver a similar "bright" sound?

I would probably go with Alessandro MS-1 at this price point and your choice of music. It's basically a more refined Grado. SR80i isn't a bad choice either. If you like bass I would look at the m50 or Denon AH-D1001.

Grados are not known for a great soundstage, but in general open backs have a larger soundstage than closed headphones. Although, a true soundstage is never possible in headphones so this usually isn't a huge factor to me. If I want a soundstage, I turn on my speakers.

Well I just don't want to get the Grado or the MS-1 and be unable to watch a movie or play a game with them because the soundstage is so bad.

My 2nd question is seperate and doesn't concern the soundstage : Do any closed back headphones have a similar "bright" sound as the Grados?

The JVC 700 or the Grados are the first cans I think of when I see these threads. Unless you can justify spending more they should work...and work very well for you.

Denon D1001 have a bright sound, with bass a little forward instead of mids like grado and are closed. Better soundstage than grado but not a HUGE difference. You'll be fine either way unless you're used to the soundstage of speakers.

No headphones really sound like Grados. They're a pretty unique sound. (The MS-1's are pretty much just modified Grados).

Part of what makes them sound great is the airy open back quality. Closed will help contain sound, but it doesn't give the sound freedom and can be muffled which is usually the complaint of closed headphones.

If bass doesn't mean much to you, the M50s shouldn't be out of sight out of mind. They're great for music, but maybe not the music you're looking for (though they're decent with jazz). The 555's do gaming and your music well. The Allesandro MS-1's are great for music and awkwardly, okay for gaming. Friend uses them for gaming and he's pretty good.

I am curious, how are the sounds of the Sony V600 or the Sennheiser HD 280?

Stay away from the V600. HD 280 is ok but probably not as much when paired with your music. Definitely not as exciting as Grado/Alessandro.
