980X or stick with my 960

Thread Starter
I was playing poker at my buddies house last night and his room mate was there, who happens to have a 980X in his build.

he was telling me he really doesn't have that much time to actually use his rig so he was considering doing a trade or sell the 980X, he offered me it for my 960 + $375. (canadian)

My buddy thought it was a good deal but I can't seem to make up my mind. I know ivy bridge is near and coming and I don't know if it's worth it.

I pretty much just use my rig for games and for a home server, and of course overclocking.

What do you guys think?

That's not bad man. I'd do it if I had some extra cash or just wanted it.

Your 960 is more than enough power, especially at 4.0GHz.

You probably spent about $300 for the 960, and the 980X is around $1000, so adding $375 would only save you only so much (maybe $200)...

Just save up your money to see what Ivy Bridge has to offer, no need to hurry and spend money.

Or if E-Peen matters to you, then I don't know what to say...

Stay with your 960 unless you do something that needs the extra power. If you can't peg out your CPU (look in Task Manager) doing your common tasks then the 980x won't offer any improvement.

Stick with the 960.
Great chip and should last you a while.
Lots of people still use dual cores, so you should be fine for the most part.

Eh, if you were constantly doing video/photo editing, or were some kind of 3D designer, I'd say "GOGOGOGOGOGO", but as it is, your 960 is plenty, wait until Ivy Bridge
