Couple of newbie folding questions

Thread Starter
Hey guys I just got my new GPU, a stock clock GTX 570, in a few days ago and have been folding away on both it and my CPU with nothing exploding and my PSU appears to hold up to the strain but I do have a few questions to help optimize my setup. Right now I am folding with the first program on this page which says "Windows XP/2003/Vista/7 GPU3 (required for Fermi) System tray client with special viewer for NVIDIA GPU's (installer msi). Version 6.41" and I believe is the one I am supposed to have for my 570 according to the GPU folding FAQ but I'm not too sure, so please correct me if I am wrong or if there is a better program I should be using for my specific GPU.

Next about my CPU which is a i5 2500k at stock clocks I am folding using the first program on this page Version 6.23 and I'm pretty sure that this is the correct one I am looking for but as of right now it appears to only want to use one of my four threads, I believe I read somewhere that I need to add something like "-smp" to the executable name but I'm not too sure so please let me know exactly what I would have to do. Also regarding my CPU folding I have heard that the "big adv" client is better if you have the CPU horsepower for it so I was wondering if that is more suited to my hardware or if I am best sticking with what I have and trying to get it to use all four of my threads. If big adv is better and my CPU is just under the threshold of being able to use it then how high would I have to overclock my CPU to use it? I don't really have much headroom with my current power supply.

I also have a couple of more general folding questions. I have heard that at least the CPU folding client only uses idle process and will not really interfere with other day to day computer tasks, is this true and does this also apply to the GPU folding aspect or would I need to turn GPU folding off when wanting to use the GPU for other things? I think my last question is that when folding on the GPU and watching Netflix (which uses Silverlight) at the same time I get stuttering in the video regardless of the hardware acceleration setting in Firefox 4 (which is turned off BTW) and I can't find any sort of hardware acceleration setting in the limited options for Silverlight so I don't know exactly what to do. I have just been turning off GPU folding when watching Netflix but I hope that there is a way around that so I can fold 24/7.

On optimizations, I have changed the settings of both folding clients to allow work units more than 10MB and to change the checkpointing frequency down to 3 minutes but those are the only changes I have made so if there are any other optimizations I should make that aren't too complex please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help I receive. Basically I want to make my rig the best most efficient folding rig it can be and make full use of the powerful hardware I have as much of the time as possible without affecting normal browsing or video watching activities and without going too deep into advanced optimizations because obviously I'm just a noob.

Yes you need to use GPU3 which you are using.

Before folding bigadv units you need to complete 10 -smp units.
Right now you are folding unicore units since you did not add that flag.
How to add flags

Yes the CPU will throttle and give priority to other applications you are using, this does not apply for the GPU client.
When gaming you may have to shut off the GPU client if its an intensive game like Metro2033/Crysis.
Some videos will lag if it uses GPU hardware acceleration so turning it off for that as well may be needed.

I think I got everything.

Thank you for the information LiLChris, glad you could get through my wall of text.

So the only tag that I would need to add to my CPU folding client would just be " -smp" without the quotation marks to get it using all my threads? Regarding big adv, I think I have already done 10 CPU WU because I have had the CPU folding for more than 48 hours now but would my i5 2500k at stock clocks be powerful enough to warrant using the other client? If so could I get a download link for the correct version of big adv and any tips or optimizations I would for that to run at it's best on my machine.

A couple of other general questions I forgot, what is the de facto standard client viewer that I should get if I wanted to be able to see things like how many PPD I am contributing? If I have been folding for more than a few days now is there any thing else I need to do other than post in the appropriate thread with my folding name to verify that I am folding successfully for 37726 and get what I think is called the "post bit" that I can click on to see my folding summary?

You finished 10 unicore units, which doesn't count for bonuses.
Also make sure you have a passkey on the client, request on here.

Just add the -config flag to change your configuration and then add that passkey.
Once you are done remove the -config flag.
You can also install the new v7 client, see my sig (SMP Folding Guide) which will be easier to setup and deal with the CPU client.

Right now you shouldn't have to worry about bigadv folding just get use to folding smp for a while to get the feel of things.

HFM (guide) will show you PPD for your clients, it does not work with the new version v7 yet, but the client has its own monitoring.

I can't even add the -smp tag to my current client, when right clicking on the shortcut as it says int he how to you linked me to the target box where I'm supposed to add the - smp tag is greyed out and I can't make any changes. So if the new v7 client is easier and also includes the PPD monitor I'd like is there any reason that I shouldn't just download that and use it instead?

I really appreciate your help, without it I would be stuck under utilizing my hardware so you're helping me help the cause.

Shouldn't he be using 6.34 rather than 6.23 (not sure if this really makes a difference though...)

No reason not to use it, follow the SMP Folding Guide, takes no more than 2 minutes to setup.

Alright I will go ahead and set up the v7 release, I'm not usually a big beta type of guy but this one shouldn't give me any trouble and gets your thumbs up right?

EDIT: got it installed and seems to be working correctly, utilizing all four threads which is good. Is the Credit field which is blank for me now where it will show my points per day once it determines them?

Thanks again for the help.

I can't guarantee that.

But since you are not folding ATI cards or a mixed of GPU clients then you are in a better chance of things not going wrong, and we need more people to test it so the bugs get ironed out.
Chances are you will not see anything wrong.

Well in that cause I will keep my fingers crossed as I'm folding... 24/7

It looks like it's working well and like I said in my edit it's working on all my thread now which is the biggest thing I wanted to get working.

Couple of new questions now that I have it working though if you don't mind. I noticed in the initial set up (which went very easily thanks to your guide BTW) that it look like this client works for GPUs also so should I be using this for GPU folding as well or stick with the GPU3 version 6.41 I have now. I will need to be able to turn off GPU folding independently of CPU folding so that I can game or watch Netflix. And is the credit field in this new version 7 client where it will show my points per day once I've folded more? It would be nice to see the points per day of my GPU some how.

Thanks.
