Laptop for College

Hi all,
My birthday and graduation are coming up, and I'll be getting my first laptop. I have no idea what's out there. I won't be doing anything too heavy duty, as I plan on bringing my PC. I just need something mobile and with decent battery. I was thinking 15.6" or smaller.

As far as gaming goes, it can't hurt but it's not my main concern. I don't know much about mobile GPU's, so I'll just accept your advice.

Please give me some good suggestions.

Price range is $600-$1000 MAX

Thanks!

EDIT: I have been advised that I'd want 14" and down.

Sager is my first choice, I just ordered mine last week. Asus is up there to as well as MSI, I would browse xoticpc.com for a good configuration.

I was thinking a prebuilt from BestBuy or Newegg. Those are usually cheaper than custom order laptops

You'd be paying a slight premium for the quality. I have vouched never to buy a name-brand prebuilt again. However; I have heard good things about HP and soney vaio. I don't have experience with either of those.

EDIT: also, if you ended up getting a faulty chip or drive you would have to deal with lousy customer service. I would actually like to hear what other people have to say about this.

EDIT EDIT: There is another benefit of getting a Sager/Clevo or Asus, and that is it is much easier to upgrade in the future. The engineers at Clevo (they make the cases Sager uses), make their cases extremely easy to access all the components, they are also very well ventilated and run colder than most other machines.

Thanks for the suggestions!

A couple of things I want to add for anyone else who wants to help
- I would prefer new Sandy Bridge CPU's
- Battery life is more important than graphics

You should definitely wait out a few months and get a laptop closer to this Fall. I work at BB, and SB laptops are very slowly trickling out. By the time you buy, you'll have quite a few more options, plus all of the various back-to-school promotions available.

I've seen a handful of SB laptop reviews, and they're shaping up to be pretty damn solid. Average battery life increased across the board, along with performance. Designs are changing too, for the better. It'll only improve as the year goes on.

Thanks,

Does anyone know about a website that compares mobile graphics or a charts or something along those lines?

Generally you need to sacrifice performance for battery life. 13" displays have less battery consumption than 15", unless you get an LED display (which is pretty much standard now), since LEDs are very efficient. The i5 SB would give better battery life than the i7, the only reason I would see the need for the i7 is if you are using intensive programs for video editing, solidworks, or photoshop. For anything else, an i3 or i5 would suffice.

Whats nice about this is, finding a laptop with better battery life is much cheaper than buying one with better performance.

I'd go for an XPS 15 with a 9cell, gt 540, and an i7.
