Possibly getting a PS3

Hi everyone,

I am actually in the process of getting an xbox 360 to fix up as my first sort of attempt into console gaming (I did have a 360 ages ago but couldn't FPS on it) I will be using the 360 for a bit (im giving it a month to see if I can get into console gaming) if I am I am going to sell on the 360 and get a PS3, basically because:

I have bought the hardware and software, im NOT paying again to actually play online (a la gold membership for xbox live)

I can buy a used PS3 which I can fix/mod and also have a bluray player as well so I wouldn't need to buy a player as well as a console.

I have a PSP which it seems you can link to it and do cool stuff lol

The PS3 can fold, I used to do some folding, but I didn't want to run my gaming rig at 50C all day, so had to stop for a while

I have noticed that a few threads are on different issues with red/yellow lights, I am guessing this is the same as the 360 RROD? Am I correct that it will basically be the same fix of reseating heat sinks and sorting proper cooling out and reflow if needed?

What are the pitfalls I need to avoid? I know that the PS3 can easily be upgraded with a bigger 2.5" HDD like you can with the 360, are there any basic mods you can do to it (much like the ducted fan shroud mod on the 360) that is easy to do and helps out?

Sorry for the newbie questions, im in the 'research' sort of phase at the moment, im not worried about taking things apart, its only a mobo, CPU and GPU in a case lol also are they also BGA components?

Thanks in advance!

If you end up fixing ylod. I would suggest you to do fan mod tut where you can control fan speed and prevent from ylod-ing again.

Would this be the fix?

http://playstationlifestyle.net/foru...ead.php?t=2376

Am I correct that overheating causes issues the same as the 360?

Do expand it a bit. I was reading online and since when you are doing reballing RSX, that is only thing that is fixed, so most of the time all you have to do is reflow RSX from both sides and and not all memory ships and cell proc.

I read that using heat and not reflowing using a BGA welder causes the solder to move its melting point higher and higher meaning that after a few of those heatgun reflows you can no longer reflow it etc

What fan mod is most common? the 360 fans actually do ramp up to the full 12V using the thermal sensor, but this is usually a last ditch attempt to cool the console. Is this the same with the PS3? What is the air flow like inside the case?

the ps3... especially if it was a sku that was fully backwards compatible would be the only console that, to me, would be worth water cooling... put in a 750 gb 7200rpm 2.5" hard drive in there plus the water cooling would equal amazing.

That's what i did with mine. Water cool it? You'll never really have to worry about ylod again.

Yeah, I think I might be doing some modding to it, especially if I was to run it for folding as well, has anyone fitted a massive air cooled heatsink to it yet like they have with the 360? Would be cool (literally) to have a blu-ray playing folding gaming rig with some crazy cooling hehe

with the release of kinect it has really made the decision harder. yes ps3 can still do more, but not having a controller is a huge selling point. i love the ps3s free network, bluray, not sure about Move i have yet to meet anyone who actually owns it. Kinect of course has limitations and virtually no games worth getting, but the same was said with Wii on immediate release. Yes third party developed games are crap but some gems are to be found.
If you can narrow down what games you like the most come out for what system, if thats applicable
