Is a SSD worth it?

Thread Starter
I just built myself a new machine and was wondering if an OCZ vertex II 60GB is worth having. My slowest component of my computer is my hard drive which is a WDC black 7200rpm. And i just wanna know if the solid state is a "good investment". I would be running my OS off it as well and have heard rumours SS Drives dont last long as a primary hard drive running an OS. I also know it drives people just like myself crazy when people go on about the windows index rating but im in a bet with my friend who says i cant get the rating over 7 which clearly i cant with a regular hard drive so will this one do it? And if so how would i have to set it up? Any help or info would be great!!!

just buy another wdc black and put them in raid 0. Btw the windows experience index is stupid. Use HD tune Pro for more accurate hdd benchmarking. (my 2 raid 0 150 gb velociraptors get a 6.3 while my 1 5400 wdc green gets a 5.9???)

I just built my sig rig and threw a 50GB Vertex II in it.. it is my first SSD and I am happy with the investment. The most noticeable improvement is in boot times; which is great for me because I have a lot of start-up programs, and I restart my computer a lot when overclocking and installing new drivers, etc.

I followed the tutorial in the link below, it is great for setting up a smaller SSD for an OS... essentially it tells you how to move your "Users" folder to your secondary drive, which is great for saving space for your OS. I have Windows 7 x64 installed, along with all drivers and a few other essentials on the SSD and I still have about 23GB left for the ever expanding OS, lol.

I would consider getting another WDC black, but im getting a great deal on the SSD and have heard good and bad things about them. It would be soo helpful if anyone had over a 7 rating on an SSD because i want to keep my 50 bucks worth of a bet

You should at least explain to him that Raid will only help if he's moving around massive sequential files all day. Raid isn't worth it unless you're into video editing. Gamers and normal desktop use would benefit far more from just buying a faster hard drive.

Everyone I know that picked up a SSD has explicitly stated that it's by far the best investment they've ever made on their computers. They're also cheap enough now that you can get a 128GB drive for a decent price, which makes the performancerice ratio even better.

My SSD arrives Friday. I'll be able to report back in myself then.

Yeah sorry but for a 64 bit OS I highly recommend atleast a 80GB. Atleast.
