Laptop for EE major

Thread Starter
So I already posted this in the off topic EE major thread but that doesn't see much traffic so I figure there is no harm in posting it here as well. I am going into an electrical engineering major next year and I was wondering what kind of laptop I am going to need. Will a 10-13 in. portable laptop with an e-350 processor cut it or am I going to need to do on the spot 2-D CAD work with my laptop?

I'm also EE and I have a m11x that has been perfect for me this last year. Runs everything that I have needed plus its small so I can carry it around without much problem.

Don't need a powerful laptop for EE. Even if you use 3D CAD and intensive graphic rendering your university will have computer in the lab to do it.

I'm pretty sure AutoCAD will be covered by an E-350 because I've seen it work on much weaker and older machines. Solidworks might be pushing it. You should try to get an answer from the school your going to about the software as it might even be listed in their syllabus. Once you have that information definite answers can come.

as much as id like to promote amd and thier latest mobile cpu, i think youre still better off getting a a laptop with at least an i3 chip in it.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4023/t...-benchmarked/3

good benches for the e350 but i3 smokes the e350 at least 2 fold in these productivity apps; autocad would be no different.

ive seen e350s in netbooks/laptops for $400-$500, i would fork over another $300 to get a laptop with an i3 or better yet i5 with an hd5470 or hd5650.

i would consider something like this:

No CAD in EE major, maybe multisim though. I used a netbook to run multisim for my engineering classes and it ran flawlessly once I upgraded the RAM from 1->2Gb. You wont need anything to powerful

Not maybe, more like a guarantee you will be using some sort of p-spice for labs
