Battery Charge Limiter

I have seen an application for the Sony Vaio that can limit the percentage to which the battery charges to 80% or 50%. I would like to know if there's any way I can either use this utility or another one to limit the battery charge on my lappy to 80% since I want the battery to last a bit.

I have searched on Google and haven't had luck.

I've seen that on other laptops and every time I saw it was in the bios and not software based. I think this a hardware level thing that won't work with a simple software install......

Well, what about the Sony VAIO Control Center? That's an app that comes with Vaio computers and it allows you to cap the max. at which you want the battery to charge to either 80% or 50%. A friend of mine has a Samsung notebook he just bought, and it comes with a utility for that, too.

What is the point? How does that even save the battery? If anything that sounds like something that will damage it faster because it's the repeated charging cycles (full or otherwise) that determine its life. At least that's the last I read. But it is a rather myth filled topic.

Lithium-ion batteries lose their capacity the most between 0-19% and 81-100%. This is why it's recommended to use this method. A cycle from from 80 to 0% is not a full cycle. After it's charged and goes from 80 to 60% again then that's considered a full cycle.

You got a source for this because I'd seriously like to know. Also, I've heard this one and heard other "myths" and so on and I want something to point to an be like; "there's the facts". Doesn't your laptop "quick charge" to 80% anyway? I know my G50 did.
I guess I'll listen to MeeGo when it tells me to turn of at 20%; though that cuts about 1-2hrs from my netbooks time away from the outlet. frown.gif
