gnome-shell, removing bloat is a good idea but for god sakes, listen to the community...

Probably both, like I do. By "deprecated" do you mean things like altering the panel or changing the appearance? Because thats gone in "fallback mode".

I'm all for removing old features, its just that nobody has told Gnome that they actually need to replace the functionality. They still haven't fixed gdm since they hacked out the theme support.

They removed the GUI.

Using gconf-editor is like telling someone to use the Windows registry to change their desktop background. Utterly ridiculous.

Well actually I think much of the removed cruft is things like hal. I probably shouldn't have mentioned GTK+ since I don't actually know what changes have been made there. Hopefully there some logical ones like not hard coding a global mouse wheel scroll rate that was only good before 1024x768 was the common resolution.

My understanding is that theres nothing to really edit in Gnome 3. The whole point of the Gnome Shell is to create a defining and concise look for Gnome. Not sure how I feel about that, but such is they way of the world.

When you think about distros like Arch & Slackware, that is NOT cool

Linux and FOSS in general, is about customising software (or more accurately, the freedom to do so). Now, as long as the ability to edit via config files is there, it's not a problem as the community will develop applications/scripts to do this, but if it's been completely buried, that is total fail. I'd hope the community would fork/respin the code into a new, open version
