Anyone else OCing your GTS 450s

post #1 of 16
Thread Starter
Hey, I am very new to overclocking GPUs, but I think I was ready to start... Or I thought I was. Right now, I have a Gigabyte GTS 450, and was trying to overclock, but I get artifacts in CoD4, not even the most strenuous game. Can anyone help or give me what they have pushed their card to?

I have (tried to) overclock in MSI Afterburner to these speeds:

Core Stock-902 OCed-1000
Shader Stock-1620 OCed-1800
Memory Stock-810 Oced-950

Does anyone see anything slap me in my face wrong, or pushed TOO far?
Thanks

PS, What GPU temps are uncomfortable for you?

I've never seen a GTS 450 over 950 MHz I eat my words, there's one here, tho i'd still say you're pushing way too far. Not all cards can be massively overclocked, no matter what kind of cooling you have. Also, considering the stock speed of the card is 783 MHz, getting 1 GHz isn't easy.

Maybe you could overclock it that high, but not without boosting volts, which generates too much heat, and extra strain on the VRM's.

To test your overclock, you could use Furmark. It puts your card to 100% load for continuous time, so if you don't get artifacts there it's highly unlikely that you'd get artifacts in games. Be watchful of temps tho. I'd recommend you have GPU-Z alongside Furmark to see volts and temps.

Also, i've not seen a GTS 450 with a good heatsink on the VRM's, so if you plan to overclock, get one. or add a fan if it has a small heatsink. If the Gigabyte card you're using is this one, you need a heatsink. Mine's an MSI single slot and it has a small heatsink, but it helps more than having em naked

For me, anything under 80c under gaming load, and 90c under furmark load is tolerable. Max temp for the chip is 95-100c

I overclocked my factory OC'd ASUS GTS 450 from:

Core: 850 -> 960
Shader: 1700 -> 1920
Memory: 1900 -> 1926

I ran benchmark on Counter-Strike: Source.
Factory: 249.71
OC'd: 245.66 (Ran it again and got 254.27)

I don't understand how I got less frames per second with 960MHz core clock.

Ive found the Gigabyte cards arn't the bestest of OC cards. My EVGA card, on the other hand, was flawless at these speeds. But since I did get another 450, SLI>>>>>OC. But thanks guys and +1

true. I've seen somewhere than SLI'ing 2 450's yields an almost 200% increase in performance. So even a slight overclock (maybe 850c/1700s/1200m) would do wonders.if you have both on SLI.

This is what I am running mine at right now. (Plays Crysis on high with no eye candy enabled. Not bad for my CPU and ram.) I'm not sure which tests I should run to compare mine with another card (say how it compares to a 470 stock).

I'm confused. It looks like our core and memory clocks are switched

I got mine to 875 core and it wouldn't go higher. Then I got it to 2100 on the memory.

A few days after that and I've spent the last week trying to get it stable at stock clocks.

Careful with that memory OC

I forget what my OC was, I think my core is around 900-950 and I have the shaders syned and then the memory is about 1000? I'll have to take a look again. I came from an 8800GTS so I'm happy with seeing temps in the high 50ºs and sometimes low 60ºs when playing some graphic intensive games. I haven''t experienced any issues.
