i7-950 - do I need HT?

Thread Starter
I managed to get my i7-950 running stable at 4.2Ghz (21 x 200) last night, but had to switch HyperThreading off for it. Do I really need HT? At 4Ghz (175x23) it was stable with HT on.

The machine is used for gaming and running VM's in Sun Virtualbox as part of my studies. It's watercooled with a H70 so the temps didn't go above 68'C..

Comments / Suggestions re HT? (rest of machine in sig)

I don't know what kind of parallel-processing requirements VM's have, but my gut says you won't miss it.

Although I would have a hard time saying that 4.0 GHz w/HT is anything more than marginally less powerful than 4.2GHz w/o HT. If it is at all.

Lemme think, about 5 vm's, sometimes six

Ubuntu Pentest Edition
BT Linux
XP Sp2
XP Sp3
Vista
and a Win7 32bit VM

The uni is trying to get us a VMware Workstation licence, but for now I'm stuck with Sun Virtualbox (sorry, going off topic)..

Hmm. Then you might want those extra threads. Besides. A 4GHz i7 won't bottleneck any game that I know of

Six VMs while gaming... are the VMs running anything intensive? (What's the CPU usage of each?)

Lol DuckieHo no...it's 5 or 6vm's OR gaming. I won't run both at the same time.

It's all just penetration testing and light to mild compiling of code. Each VM gets 512mb ram, hence one upgrade I am pondering being another 6gb of ram. It doesn't stutter, but I do see some mild paging once a while.
