[SA] AMD’s Southern Islands tapes out

The SI/7xxx cards are a tweaked, more effiCIent, and polished Cayman/69xx design, so they should be pretty low risk, and the spins will be minimal. If all goes really well, think 6 weeks from mid-February, or about now, for silicon to come back from the fab, then 2 weeks for testing, and 3 months for production wafers to start popping up. That would put delivery of cards to users in late July with time to spare, add 6 weeks for a possible, even likely respin, and late August is the outer bound. Since this is a pretty low risk part, we don’t expect there to be many huge difficulties with the design.

More or less like the 68xx?

In that case, it could be a great oportunity for AMD to tweak the HD6970 and make it blow the GTX580.

Or to make a HD6990 that abandons the "noisy as a pornstar" trend that AMD's dual GPU cards follow.

I thought the 7000 cards were scheduled for 2012. Good news if true.

What? So no 28nm for 7000 series? Doubt it

wait what
.....isn't HD7K supposed to be a complete new architecture on 28nm.....
HD6K was supposed to be a hybrid of HD5K and HD7K on 40nm....IIRC

oh wait....i forgot, this is S/A....
not trusting em....besides, wasn't there a news post just a few days or a week ago that stated that AMD will be rolling out the low-mid end range of HD7K around Q3-Q4 this year before slowly rolling out the high end HD7K cards early next year?

Well it is an unconfirmed article o.O
And it has been a while since we've seen a SA article like this right? Well either way I doubt AMD will do another series with tweaks since it won't be enough. Well it really depends but I think if they can do 28nm then they will. I highly doubt we'll be seeing 7k cards so soon.

You design the chips ahead of the process.

It was my understanding that Southern Island was going to be a completely, from the ground up, new architecture.

Boooo....
