Gaming nostalgia

Oh man. Those old days were the TIMES. I remember when I got the Descent demo on a "50 Shareware Games" CD. There was so much trash on that CD, but when I saw Descent next to Doom I thought the name sounded cool. So I played it.

And played it.

And played it.

Until I got so fed up with the level 7 super boss that I looked for cheats on the BBS, beat it and moved on.

After that, I went with my Dad to a shop up in Vancouver, WA. It was a software store that had some cool games and what not. Amongst all the hype and crazy games, I found Descent II in a box. It was staring at me right in the face. I knew I had to have it.

After I showed it to my Dad, he knew that I enjoyed Descent so he bought it for me. I was so ecstatic. I remember the drive home back in our Plymouth Voyager minivan. I was reading the fresh, crisp book and staring at the dark blue CD. The embossed Diamond Claw on the box was just the coolest thing ever.

I got home and shoved the CD in the drive and got to setup. REDBOOK AUDIO! THIRTY MEGS TO INSTALL (the Crazy install was like 300 megs!) 16 MB RAM REQUIRED. It was DEVASTATING. We could barely install it. I think later we went and got more memory so we had 32 MB. At any rate, the game ran slow as nails on our 486 DX2 but it was the COOLEST thing ever. I remember being so confused in level 1, oh man that game had me running circles trying to figure out what I was doing. And the Thief Bot?! Oh man! I remember listening to the soundtrack in my CD player almost every day, whether I was at home or on the bus on my way to school. What a great soundtrack. I have the entire thing still memorized to this day.

I remember later going to a CompUSA and finding a Diamond Monster3D video accelerator card. SO COOL. It would make my games AWESOME! We got it and instantly my game ran way faster. With 4 megs of onboard video memory I was unstoppable! Later, we upgraded to a solo graphics card -- the S3 Virge. Oh my gosh, another massive upgrade! Everything was so smooth and crisp, but the hit effects were kinda lacking.

About a year later I got my own computer, and got with it a Voodoo 3 and an AMD Thunderbird. I HAD THE BEST COMPUTER AROUND. My computer was so fast. I played Descent for years -- literally years. I built entire level sets, made my own robots. Edited the HAM and HOG files and even hacked my own weapons into the game. I reworked an entire remake of the game with my 12 year old brother, complete with a full 20 level set. My friend gave me the Vertigo 1.2 series for Christmas, and it had MORE MUSIC and an entire set of new robots and levels! It was sooo cool! And then I found out about Total Annihilation, but that is a story for another time.

;D

I miss those days.

x-wing then the vastly superior tie fighter, team fortress classic, counter strike, diablo for hours and hours and hours with every character clickclickclickclick maddness, warcraft then the even better warcraft II was pretty epic when it first came out "ready to work", starcraft and all 3 campaigns at once not the one at a time bullcrap, even warcraft III was great, the hack and slash jedi academy games, putting several hundred hours in the original Baulders Gate yet never actually beating it maddening...

before the dark days... before the empire....

I started with Descent as well. Original 486 was so lacking it looked like a photo slide show, but I didn't care. Played the heck out of it. Then I saw Mechwarrior and my life was never the same. Got a new computer (don't even remember what it was), but I played Mechwarrior 2 with decent fps even with the plants! Lost many hours to that one.

I just finished building a legacy machine so that I can play my old Mechwarrior 2 which I still have

It's on!

In case some of you want to see what it is all about: Mechawarrior 2 download from cnet

Age of Empires I DEMO, the map where you start with only two monks.

Commander Keen 4 (We all know who Keen is)

Duke Nukem 2 (No introduction needed)

DooM I & II ( While DooM I had FOUR different chapters, DooM II only had one but all kicked equally much ass!)

Wacky Wheels (Super Mario Kart rival, but with hedgehogs instead of shells as weapons)

Jazz Jack Rabbit (A lot like Sonic but for PC and with rabbit vs turtle)

Blood I & II (The origin of football games comes from kicking heads)

Knights of Xentar (stellar game with a stupid plot which makes it even more awesome)

STUNTS (A better game than NFS SHIFT II, more realistic as well)

Lotus 3 (Same as above but better graphics, including wind simulation and fuel consumption)

Then there are the all time classics (dupes included):

  • Diablo II
  • DooM I & II
  • AoE I & II
  • SMB 1&3
  • Half-Life & Half-Life 2
  • FF IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Secret of Mana I & II/Evermore (Seiken densetsu series)
  • Suikoden I & II
  • MGS1
  • Pokémon Red/Blu/Yel
  • Megaman I, II, III, IV, 9
  • Battlefield 1942 / Desertcombat mod
  • Grand Theft Auto I, II, III
  • Need for Speed III: Hot Puruit / Porsche 2000 / Road Challenge/High Stakes
  • Starcraft & Starcraft Brood War
  • Aliens vs Predator 1 & 2
  • Carmageddon 2 Carpocalypse Now
  • Command and Conquer: Red Alert
  • Krush Kill 'n' Destroy Extreme
The list can go on but those are the ones that comes to mind and have forgot to add games I'll smash my face to the table for not including but forget to add.
