[NYTimes] A First Look At Mercury's Surface - Page 3

It's not in black and white...

This is pretty much what it looks like, in visible wavelengths.

If you've seen pictures before of it, that's because they're false colour or composite images. Because it's all rock and dust on the surface, and none of that rock or dust reflects strongly in any visible spectrum peak, it just looks grey

Water erodes the craters on Earth. Our atmosphere also burns up the smaller meteors before they can hit the surface.

Some make it through.

Well he's actually a theoretical physicist. Although he can explain in great detail about quantum gravity, but questions regarding Mercury and other planets may be better reserved for astrophysicists or astronomers (NOT astrologers).

It's like asking Wayne Gretzky to teach you how to perform a jersey pull... Yeah, he knows the basics, he's witnessed them, but I'd rather ask Tie Domi.

Not going to lie, the spider legs of fallout radiating out from the large crater is really quite cool. That would have been a very cool impact to witness.

This is 100% real. Mercury is one of two inner planets and it is a completely inactive planet which happens to look a lot like our moon.

Venus is the other inner planet and it is enterly molten with a think atmosphere.

Hopefully that puts any remaining confusion to rest.

Yeah. Whats dead is dead. What's grey is grey. Our moon and mars fit both descriptions. Mars may seem red but no, it isn't. Now I'm thinking its a possibly picture of the surface of mars' polar ice caps.

NASA is known to doctor images on occasion (Mars is actually brown, for instance, not red), but it's never willfully passed off a photo of one thing as a photo of something else.

Where's the lava and the rivers of molten rock flowing everywhere?!?! I expected to see flames shooting up and brimstone raining down from the sky......shoot, I'm disappointed

I wonder how much it cost for a picture of a very hot, very bright, dead planet?
