Aiming to get my 980x to 4.0GHz +

Thread Starter
As the title says I want to try and get my 980x to 4.0Ghz or above.

Ideally I want to hit 4.5Ghz but for starters I would be happy with 4.0.

I have never done overclocking before, I had a little bash at it when I first got the rig about 10 months ago but it was literally a 5 minute bash and wasn't really a serious attempt.

So speak to me as a complete OCing novice, and expect some simple questions in return.

For starters I want to make sure I'm prepared so I guess I will need programs such as Prime95?

Can you suggest any other programs which will help me out?

Now onto the actual overclocking, does anyone have the same system as me (or similar) that I can take the bios settings from? I know that all systems are differeny and what might work for you possibly won't work for me, but it's a starting point.

What is the easiest way to get this chip to 4.0? just increase the multiplier?

Is 4.5Ghz a sensible OC to have for 24/7 use?

Apologies if these questions seem trivial but I need to be sure.

Thanks in advance.

Prime 95 is what you should use to test the stability of your overclocks. As for overclocking your chip, you could either go off of this guide or ask around. I personally like the guide that I linked to, as it helped me get my i7 to 3.8 stable on air. On you 980x you should be able to hit 4 easy. 4.5 will be a little harder to hit for 24/7 use but since you are under water it is possible provided you find people to help you. You could also get in touch with any of the i7 folders in the team competition as they know how to overclock chips for 24/7 use.

I recommend Prime95 and Intel Burn Test. You'll want a temp monitoring program as well. I use RealTemp. Lastly I use CPU-Z and my motherboards software to monitor the vcore.

Ok I'm now at home, I have Prime 95 and I already had Coretemp so i'll use that.

Where would you suggest I start? I read the previous thread that was linked about OCing i7 but I figured the 980x would be slightly different with the unlocked multiplier? don't know if the process would be easier/different to reach 4.0Ghz?

I have a pretty similar setup and would be happy to give you some advice. It would help alot to post your RAM's rated speeds. That aside, I've found multiplier overclocking to be a good start, followed by the BCLK to eke out the last few MHz. I'm not sure about the P6X, but the P6T's are infamous for throttling multi's anytime Turbo is enabled (i.e. the multiplier is increased past 25), so be sure to get i7Turbo to keep an eye out for it.

The rated frequency is the most important aspect. I'm going to assume 1600 7-7-7-20. I'm going to toss some BIOS settings at you; give them a shot and I'd be happy to explain any options you'd like to know more about / don't understand.

Yeah you were right to assume 1600, thanks for those bios settings i'll have a play with them tomorrow when I get home from work and if I have any questions/problems I'll send you a PM, if that's ok with you?

Sounds great! I'd love to hear how it works out for you. There's a lot to overclocking an extreme chip. Don't be afraid to ask for help! :]
