trying to oc this build

Thread Starter
assuming this is the right place for my post, i'd love some pointers on overclocking my build. i put all the info i have on hand in my system info but the basics are a q9550 on an ep45 ud3p with 8 gigs of corsair dominator 1066 and a gigabyte hd 4850 1g. i've had it at 3.2 in the past but always had cooling issues with that godawful stock hsf the 9550 came with, now i've got a scythe ninja 3 on it and i'm ready to squeeze some speed outta this thing. my main hangup is my bios settings, i've tried a few combinations i pieced together from articles on here over the last few days but it won't past post, i lose track of the beeps but after 3 auto retries it reverts to safe settings. how do i put up my bios settings?

What exactly did you change?
Normaly you start by looking how high your vcore is use CPU-Z or something.
Change it in the BIOS to this voltage manually.
Then you start raising the FSB but with the memory unlocked so the RAM doesn`t get overclocked.
I could write much much more, but all that stuff is writen else where on this site.
Search for for mobo on this website and you`ll find massiv infos about it.
I really would like to help you and here are massiv people how are willing to help but sadly you have to do some homework first
You have to know your mobo and its settings before you start changing values here and there.

this is a very basic explanation of overclocking

its basic maths. your Q9550 is rated at 1333mhz. you always divide this number by 4 so 1333/4= 333, this is your fsb.
then your processor (cpu) has a multiplier of 8.5
so 333 x 8.5 = 2830mhz or 2.83GHz

can you raise the fsb? yours is now 333. (333 x 8.5 = 2830mhz or 2.8ghz ) try rising it to 350
boot into windows
download realtemp and coretemp (google them)
install and run them
then download intel burn test (ibt) and run it.
have a look in task manager and notice how much free ram is listed.

in ibt set threads to 4 (for 4 cores) and then click on custom ram and enter an amount just below the free amount.
eg. i have 2520mb free ram. so i enter 2500 into the custom ram.
run the test for 5 passes.
keep an eye on temps (do not let it go over 80.c)

if test runs fine, go back into bios, and change frequency (fsb) to 370 and repeat the tests.
keep doing this in 20mhz steps until windows will not boot. then just go back a step (remove 20 from the fsb) to the last stable frequency, or
just raise the cpu voltage a couple of levels. it should now boot.
its a balancing act, higher voltages will get you higher fsb, but it will also give you higher temps.

cool sounds like i've got a great starting point, i'll mess around with some stuff tonight and get some more info up here. i have overclocked this in the past but it was always hit and miss, i did run 3.2g for quite a while but my temps kept jumping up too high for comfort. thanks for the pointers i'll post how i'm doin later

my vcore stays at a pretty constant 1.18, i set that to be standard in bios and moved fsb up to 370 but it won't pass post, i tried higher voltage (1.25) and still no dice. i've seen templates for bios settings for posting on here, how do i go about getting that?

with my Q6600 i couldnt get past 3.0ghz with a x9 multi.
so i changed it to 8

if you can. change your multiplier to 8,
so for 3.2ghz its 400 x 8 = 3200 or 3.2ghz

I wouldn`t be scared to raise the vcore. I`m running mine @3,7GHz and 1,3v 24/7.
There is still headroom to the max. voltage (1,36x or something)
Maybe you try 1,28v to see if it boots. Of course you later want to find the minimal voltage you can run your desired GHz and be stable. But for now just to make shure "it works" raise it a bit! And plz don`t forget to unlink your RAM so the RAM doesn`t gets o.c. aswell. Cause you should o.c. your RAM after the CPU-clock is as high you want and stable.
Btw: Plz don`t tell me that with this mobo you stop o.c-ing @3,2
Good Luck and HF!
Edit: The RAM is the problem i would guess --> mine went to about 3,4Ghz with 1,25v and i think many others will confirm that.

There's no reason your setup can't do 4.0 all day long. Post your BIOS settings and I'll help you out with the rest.

i've had several people say this is a great setup for 4.0g, i stopped at 3.2 and lowered it back to stock because i was using the stock hsf on my processor, i finally replaced it with the scythe ninja 3. the ram issue makes sense, i just need to figure out which settings make the ram clock static. probably easy theres only a few settings for ram in the bios. where can i get one of those handy templates for my bios settings and is that the easiest way to show them on here? thanks again for all the replies, i get all gooey every time i see somebody with a similar build all oc'd out lol

Well I had the same motherboard and OC'd my e8500 to 5ghz by lowering the multiplier and messing with that memory ratio crazy bs so that I could increase the bus and not crazy overclock the memory.
