My computer freezes with "sound loop" only when idle

Hello, I recently built a new computer (for spec see signature) and I am having a troubles with it. I have overclocked my 2500k to 4.8GHz (offset voltage +0.095-0.110 with High LLC) and it ran quite smooth for about a week, at full load it was getting max 1.45v but it was rarely fully loaded.

Then I thought why not lower voltage a little and went down to 4.5GHz with about 1.37v (also offset mode). It ran perfectly, passed P95 blend test for about 16 hours as well as 50 tests IBT (using Maximum load) without any issue. It runs games perfectly, no crashes there. Problem appears when I leave my PC in idle (web browsing, music listening etc.) and it will eventually freeze and I can hear a sound loop (probably what was last in sound buffer, because I can't hear anything if my speakers were silent just before the freeze)

So my question is what can cause this issue, it really only appears when the computer is idle? I am thinking it may be because I have my offset voltage set wrong and CPU may not get enough voltage when it's idle, so I thought I could try manually set 1.37v and see if problem persists, but then I wouldn't want to give up undervolting my CPU.

For the moment I tried to reset my BIOS setting and run at stock to see if it's overclock related. At this setting it looks like it doesn't use turbo at stock, I see in CPU-Z it's only 34x100) which is strange, must I enable it in BIOS (don't want to reboot now to check it)?

i had this problem. i overclocked my sound card and it went. smile.gif

Naaaa only joking:p

set the clocks back to normal, and if you still get this " sound loop " then you need to RMA something;)

Does the image on the screen just freeze?
Any graphical lines? Any distorted images?
Any error messages after rebooting?
Any BSOD's?

Yes image on the screen just freeze, I cant move mouse etc. but image is not distorted nor does it have any artifacts.

No BSOD, I need to power off/reset my computer, and no messages after rebooting, it only shows in event logger kernel error - system was not shut down properly...blablabla

All I can see from there would be GPU related.
I read that sometimes ago HD5xxx would hang while going to sleep mode.

I can try putting 5850 or 8800GT there if using stock CPU settings will fail. Although I wouldn't suspect it being GPU issue, otherwise freeze could happen in windows when CPU/RAM were being tested in Prime95/IBT...

If it hangs when idle make sure it doesn't go idle.

Fold away! devil.gif

Haha sorry for that. I would uninstall drivers for the 6870 using DriverSweeper and reinstall the newest drivers fresh. Only thing I can think of. Doesn't really sound like it's CPU related. But that's just my take.

I actually reinstalled whole system from scratch today. During installation it went without problems, I even let it idle from time to time and it didn't froze. But then after all drivers were installed I rebooted and not long after it froze again. Coincidence?

I installed newest drivers:

Bluetooth: Atheros_AW_AR3011_Bluetooth_Driver - from ASUS support page
Chipset driver: infinst_autol - newest from Intel
Intel network driver: PROWinx64 - from Intel
USB3 Controller drivers: Renesas_USB3_V20320_XPVistaWin7 - from ASUS support page
Audio driver: Vista_Win7_R258_x64 - from Realtek

I might try reinstall OS again and don't install any drivers to see how long it will last, or even disable these in the BIOS. I particularly don't trust that Renesas driver, never heard of them, never had any drivers from them smile.gif

That is your potential problem. Once overclocked, leave all that power saving options disabled. They cause issue when system has to clock up and down. I learned it first hand.
