Sick of Firefox. Need help getting started with Chrome.

If you want to skip my rant, just go down to the last paragraph.

Let me give you a little behind-the-scenes as to what happened:

I got tired of Firefox crashing and locking up for no apparent reason, doing stupid stuff like not showing images on some pages randomly, having Mozilla create new versions every couple of months that do not support my my most used add-ons, the general slowness of some media-rich pages to load, and having to resort to using IE to view flash on some sites without crashing. (YUCK!) And please don't tell me to reinstall or upgrade my Java and Flash and whatnot because I have done all of that and then some many times along with having to make tweaks in the about:config page to get some things to play/look right.

Thinking it would fix my problems, I finally broke down and "upgraded" to Firefox 4 despite my most beloved add-on "multirow bookmarks toolbar" not being supported. (Once again, not surprised) After using FF4 for a few days I am having so much of a hard time. It seems to be broken just as much as FF 3.x and I have seen absolutely no speed increase at all. I hate the buttons and layout , I had to reinstall it twice just to get my "bookmarks" button to show up other than when the "customize" feature was activated, and now all of my .gif images like the smilies on OCN do not play and are just frozen at the first frame all the time.

I used to be such a proponent for Firefox and was neck-deep in the grassroots campaign when it first appeared years ago. The shop that I worked at back then used to put it on all customer's computers and we helped to spread the word to people who would not have otherwise ever heard of FF because we were in a great position to do so. I used to be something of a FF fanboy like a lot of others here. Now I am just sick of it. It seems like Firefox like so many other things on the internet has become a victim of it's own popularity.

Now I would like to move onto Chrome because I have no doubt that I will not have nearly as many problems, but I also know that Chrome is not nearly as useful and customizable, being as it does not have all of the add-ons that FF does. The problem is that the basic Chrome is far too basic. There is no home button, bookmarks button, bookmarks toolbar, I cannot move things around to my liking and organize them, I like to have zoom page buttons and I cannot add them, and there are a lot of other things that I used to like about FF that I cannot do with Chrome. At least not that I can see. Can someone help me to make Chrome more Firefox-like? There must be something I am missing since the browser is almost unusable in how stripped-down it comes out of the box. I mean, back, forward, and refresh buttons only? Is that all Google thinks that people use? How do I customize it and move the buttons around? Is there any good add-ons or tutorials that will help me make the transition?

Thanks for any help.

I use both browsers here and there (I prefer Firefox). Chrome has come a long way, most add-ons are indeed out there for both browsers. The home button can be enabled on the Option menu, as can most of the other things you mentioned.

Perhaps, if Firefox is freezing, try Minefield, which is a actually an user modded Firefox. I don't know of any good tutorials, but I am sure I can help if you have any specific questions.

I really wish I could help but firefox works perfect for me and 4.0 is definitely faster in certain situations. These issues you are having shouldn't be happening.Something isn't right.

If what you are describing happened to me I would re install windows so quick...

chrome has all those things, it's just much more organized. i didn't like it at first, but i've gotten used to it now and wouldn't go back. i'd rather use more of the screen for content and not buttons. you can zoom easily by holding Ctrl and scrolling with the wheel on the mouse. the home button should be at the top left of the address bar, but you need to check it under options. click the wrench button at the far top right. under Tools, you can select to show bookmarks. you can also go to the bookmark manager under there.

i still use chrome 'fresh out the box' as such, and tbh, i prefer it this way, simple, is faster, and i want speed, works for me!

Chrome is not as customizable as firefox, but you can do some of the basic things you some of the basics right out of the box, such as add the home button and keep a permanent bookmark bar. There are a good bit of extensions for Chrome now and I would obviously recommend getting adblock.

Strange that your having issues with Firefox, mine is running very smooth (both 3 and 4).

Thanks. I now have a home button, but still nothing else. Now I need a bookmarks toolbar and a bookmarks button to at least be functional. I am still on FF because I cannot even use Chrome to make this thread.

Firefox makes me unstable when my PC comes out of standby if a browser window was open at the time. Then it does this laggy jittery thing for the first few minutes when the window gets moved around.

Ok. Then how do I activate them or put them in the browser? I'm not trying to be a smartass, I am just totally lost here.

I have a bookmarks toolbar once again! Yay! Thank you so much. I didn't see that in the "tools" section. This is the kind of info I am looking for.
