I noticed that when i got the UK keyboard for my Thinkpad, then I searched a bit about this strangeness, but with no luck.
Someone who knows a lot more about layouts than I do had this to say -

The history of the ASCII vertical bar is a complicated subject.

Two of the characters on the IBM 29 keypunch were a solid unbroken vertical bar, and a symbol like a dash, but with a short vertical line going down on the right side. These symbols were used for OR and NOT in the language PL/I.

When ASCII added lower case, back in 1968, the symbols | and ~ (used in math textbooks for a Boolean NOT) were added, with the intent of allowing PL/I programs to be typed in ASCII.

But the PL/I programmers screamed and whined. "We won't be able to program in PL/I", they said, "unless our department shells out for one of those fancy new ASCII terminals with lower case!", they cried.

And so ASCII ! translates to the EBCDIC |, and ASCII ^ translates to the EBCDIC Logical NOT symbol. This despite the fact that there is an EBCDIC ! on the IBM 29 keypunch that it would have been nice to have the ASCII ! translate to. So PL/I took priority over the English language.

Since ASCII | did not translate to EBCDIC |, many terminal makers decided to make the ASCII | a broken vertical bar to help avoid confusing people.

Yes but this doesn't explain why the pipe and broken pipe are in the right place on the (say) UK HP or Acer notebook but not on the Dell and Lenovo ones.

Given the my limited knowledge of the UK layout i call "right" the layout that matches the one offered by windows and linux and wikipedia.

this one, instead is the one present on thinkpads and dell keyboards

The one in that Dell keyboard is the 'correct' marking. Compare with the original UK layout Model Ms (generally, the canonical representation for the key markings for any layout is to look at that country's Model M) -

In fact, even the very first IBM PC keyboards had the broken pipe symbol printed onto the key that produces the standard, regular 'ole pipe.

As for why the broken pipe prints a proper pipe - like a lot of stuff that ended up on PC keyboards, it's probably a hangover from the terminal days, where they wanted to be consistent with older stuff, even if it didn't really make sense. Just in the same way you see US keyboards with Enter AND the Return symbol printed on them.

Yes definitely a fuzzy matter.

Wikipedia, for example, reports the broken pipe above the slash in the Italian layout, which produces a pipe when pressed.

But no one cares because there is just a single pipe on the Italian layout.
The UK one, having both signs, looks more weird (and seem that no one cares, too).

Bah I bit the bullet and ordered a U9BL-S from amazon.com. I figure itl do until I find something better. A little while ago my backspace key kept sticking and it prompted me to get something to replace it.
If worst comes to worst I can always ebay it and make my money back.
