New to Linux! Got some Questions..

Thread Starter
I finally took the plunge into Linux.

Originally I had not done any research and tried working with Debian. Huge mistake. As a beginner to Linux and coding in general, Debian kicked my @$$. I got discouraged and left it alone for a couple of weeks until I saw a "Linux for Dummies" book at a closing book store. Obviously I could have found everything I needed on OCN, however, this book came with a installation/live disk that had something like 8 different distributions.

After reading about a third of the large book, I decided to give it another shot on my laptop. I partitioned my ssd and installed Fedora 12 (I learned my lesson from Debian and went with an easier distro for a beginner). I really want to give this a true shot, so I installed openoffice and a media player here and there so I could play CDs, DVDs, and stream videos online. Everything I normally do on my laptop in win7, I now have a substitute in Fedora. No reason to go back to win7 unless I'm on my desktop and playing games (I don't really like wine that much).

I have to say, I love Fedora so far. I love the control that I have of just about everything relating to my laptop. I'm really happy I took the time to start this. That said, there is still a lot I can learn and I plan to learn it all!!

I have a few questions for anyone who feels like helping a newbie out:

Is there a program that I can install for bluray playback? My laptop has a BD drive and I own a ton of bluray movies that I like to take with me when I'm travelling.

Is there anything that you guys find absolutely necessary to have/know/run?

How do you guys handle this new found power and excitement every time you boot up and open a new terminal?

Thank you to anyone with any advice!

Welcome to the world of linux!

Have a look here for a way to play blurays - it's essentially vlc, but you have to put a bit of effort in to get it to work.

In terms of essential applications - it depends what you want to do.

Certainly get vlc (sudo apt-get install vlc) and firefox/thunderbird and gimp if fedora package doesn't come with them (never installed it tbh).

And with regard to the that feeling you get when you log in as root - it never goes away

VLC runs in Linux, I'm fairly sure it is capable of blu-ray playback.

I would uninstall openoffice and install libreoffice.

Some other good programs:
exaile - nice simple music player
guvcview - really good webcam application
brasero - good disk burning utility
gimp - photoshop like image editor
chromium - speedy browser that chrome is based on
firefox 4 - best browser in my experiences (not fact, just opinion )
transmission - simple minimalistic bittorrent client
drupal - bittorrent client similar to utorrent
skype - yes, it has a native linux version

Welcome to Linux! If you have any other questions feel free to fire them out.

He is running fedora which uses rpm packages, apt-get is for deb packages. The correct syntax is:

sudo yum install vlc

+1 on Libreoffice. You'll have to download the rpm, because I don't think it's in any repository just yet.

I prefer:
rhythmbox
chrome
devede - disc burning
and agree with everything else.

If VLC can't play it (any format in general), I don't know what would.

If you need some help getting things set up, I always head over to myguides because I forget a lot of it. Mainly the repos. http://www.my-guides.net/en/guides/l...allation-guide

Any other help just ask. We have a few Fedora people in here, but anyone should be able to help out with Linux in general.

if you want a sweet desk reference book check out the linux+ book by sybex, its only bout 40$ good stuff

also... fedora doesnt have sudo set up by default, so he would have to su then run yum install vlc not sudo yum install vlc

if you want a sweet bunch of command line stuff i was jotting down quite a lot in this thread: http://www.overclock.net/linux-unix/...-terminal.html
Kinda meh now...
