DOTA is a direct copy of the game, the same map, no new ones, no new heros, and no new items. they are taking DOTA adding a 2 in the title and upgrading the graphics, and they are going to charge money for it. Thats rather bogus.
HoN and LoL are just as guilty of this, I mean either way both companies are going to have to build a map/heroes from scratch, its not much harder to make new ones than remake old ones. Personally I like the current DotA map/heroes/items. I wouldn't mind if they stayed the same. The reason I view DotA 2 as a positive is because instead of dumbing it down like LoL (not as much in HoNs case) they to keep the spirit and gameplay of DotA unchanged as much as they can, just removing the limitations of the warcraft3 engine. That is exactly what I want honestly.

If your worried that it will hurt the current community of DotA, especially regarding competitive players, you are probably right. Most of them will probably move to DotA 2, in addition to a large amount of HoN and LoL players.

Your reasons are fair enough and so are mine, we just put more importance on different things.
