SAMSUNG KEYLOGGER UPDATE: looks like BS - Page 10

If it is, indeed, preinstalled before you buy the laptop, then it will have the same appearances and attributes as was originally claimed by the guy who started this and originally contacted Samsung. If not, then you don't have it, and the "sl" folder has nothing to do with starlogger, and it's just a coincidence. That's why I suggested manually searching in the first place. Oversensationalism ftl.

It's still interesting how this went from a guy claiming to him that Samsung admitted that they knew of and intentionally installed starlogger for monitoring usage/gathering info, to now the official stance of samsung is that the initial findings were that of the vipre scanner mis-identifying a folder. Apparently Vipre (never heard of it until now) only found and flagged a folder--not an application??? This is lame.

Either the OP or a mod should edit the original post, providing an update that this was all a misunderstanding.

I cannot find the exe nor DLL's, I've scanned with everything from spybot to all known antivirus projects except VIPR, nothing has detected anything other then "tracking cookies" on a default install from samsung

It's good that nothing has picked up anything suspicious for yours!

I wonder how Samsung will further respond to that guy's claims in his blog (if at all). For an IT consultant, he doesn't seem to be a very careful with his logical determination of whether something is real or not. I wouldn't hire him, lol...

Yea, and I overreacted also too, spending $500 on a new laptop only to hear reports of keyloggers, but after 12+ hours of scanning. I don't see anything other then the "sl" directory.

Oh well, APRIL FOOLS I guess

But Samsung is aware of the claims, that article spread like wild fire yesterday, Samsung is VERY AWARE and trying to keep the PR positive

That was a rumored statement, and they never directly linked it to the SL folder. For all we know their monitoring tool (if they have one) could be an obvious piece of bloatware and not some hidden keylogger.

But still, I would always reformat a new computer even if it doesnt seem like it has bloatware.

Yeah, definitely someone didn't do their homework: http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00002133.html

Surprised to hear this came from Network World of all places.

Well im satisfied that this was just a misunderstanding. I've actually managed to remove a lot of the crapware that came pre-installed apart from a few things with features that I actually like.

If look underneath your laptop you'll find a Windows CD-Key. Just download the version of Windows that came preinstalled with your computer from Microsofts website use the CD-key to activate.
