[Toms] Firefox 5 Preview Available Now - Page 3

Good thing is that these updates are all for otherwise free browsers.

As for numbering scheme... higher numbers to me means more crap to have been fixed. I use Chrome at home and Firefox at work. They are the same in terms of performance to me. I like Chromes uncluttered and simple look/layout. I appreciate FF's layout because I have been used to that type of layout since the first browser came out.

Firefox's layout isn't cluttered in the latest release, unless you're referring to still using Forefox 3.

That is the case... I have been lazy and havent dl'ed FF4 yet... maybe tomorrow since it seems like it will be a slow day.

This is still a beta isn't it?
Already? Why don't they just give every update another number increase?

Why don't they just call it BetaFox lol.

I don't see what the problem is here. Its not like when they finish FF4 they just sit back and go "Well...what do we do now?"

No, they immediately start on the next build. Actually they probably started on this build before 4 was even released. All the features they didnt have time to put into 4 are put into 5.

Unfortunately, that's part of why they're changing it.
Part of? I don't see any other reason. I mean, even internally they refer to it as Firefox 4.2, which has more significance than Firefox 5. It's marketing for idiots who don't get the point of version numbers.

You'd be surprised how much the version number of a product sways the consumer. This is pure marketing, and I don't blame them. Silly to most of us, the informed. A necessary move for a business looking to maximize profits.
