Weird GPU and CPU performance dips

Thread Starter
I have a weird problem that I encounter on Bad Company 2. Well besides the low GPU usage on both my cards, I get performance dips during online gameplay randomly from time to time. I'm running the game at ALL HIGH 4xMSAA AFx16 HBAO=ON VSYNC=OFF TRIPLEBUFFER=0.

I recently added a second 8800GT for SLI. I have the following setup:

Athlon II X3 450 (not unlocked or overclocked or volt modded, all default bios settings)
ASUS M4A79XTD Evo (latest bios)
2x8800GT SLI (via SLI patch 1.2 beta, running on 266.58 drivers from nvidia)
OCZ Fatality 550W PSU
2x2GB G.Skill DDR3 at 1333Mhz (I tried 1600 but I get BSOD on Windows boot)

Any idea what could be the problem?

EDIT: Pic attached

Factory default all of you bios settings.

I have had the same issue while playing COD: Black Ops. It was my second cfx card which is still covered by my warranty. Swap out a video card at a time to see if its a particular card or not.

That all looks pretty 'normal', in the sense that low GPU usage and random perf drops have plagued BFBC2 (online) since the day it came out.

Does the usage look like this (hovering around 50% per card) when you do the single player campaign?

Also this game definitely benefits from having an OC'd i5/7 series quad. A stock-clocked Athlon II X3 is a bit underpowered for BFBC2.

I tried running factory default but same problem. I should mention that I had youtube playing a song in background and it seemed to stop playing while the video kept stuttering.

It dips in performance in single player too. I get about 60% avg usage per card which is good. It goes up to 90% during cutscenes.

Do you think 955 Phenom II is good enough for this game?

If you lower the IQ settings even further (like, turn off AA and HBAO, and drop the resolution to 1024x768) do these dips go away or at least become less severe? Before I go telling you to drop money on a new CPU, I think it's important to rule out that the 'issue' is the gfx cards (even though their usage is relatively low ... there are other possible reasons for this aside from cpu-bottlenecking - like running out of VRAM ... btw what resolution are you at, and what video memory usage are you seeing in AB?).

Also ... I assume you aren't trying to run it in windowed mode, right?

No, I'm not running it in windowed mode all the time. The stuttering and performance drop happens in both mode. Usually I alt+tab quickly to get rid of the problem.

I think it might be the VRAM size. It's around 475/2048 on MSI AB at 1920x1080 and 260/2048 at 1024x768. I noticed that the stuttering did occur less frequently at lower settings but it still happened randomly even at lowest settings.

A 955 should be OK as well as your amount of RAM. Try running the game on a single card (both individually) to see if one of the cards is the problem. Also back the graphics down a bit to see if that helps with your SLI setup.

I wouldn't think it would be a problem to have a browser open and playing a song in youtube would be the problem but it wouldn't hurt to try not to play something in your browser while playing a CPU/ GPU heavy game.

Also, are your components overheating?
How long have you had this problem? Did it just start out of the blue?

Well I just test it out again. None of my components are overheating. It runs perfectly fine on single GPU. CPU hovers around 80% on all 3 cores and GPU 99-100%. So I'm guessing my cpu can keep up with SLI or is it PSU issue?

Hmmm, It would help if you filled out your specs in your sig... What PSU do you have? Brand? Wattage?

Did you try running both cards solo to see if one of them was faulty?

EDIT

OOPS! sorry I forgot that you had your specs in the OP. Yeah, a 550W PSU might be your problem.

Upon further review the manufacturer recommends 400W for a single 8800GT. I'm not finding a whole lot of what is required for a 8800GT SLI setup. You might just want to ask NVDIA to get the best answer.

And from another source "8800GT scales terribly in SLI, in fact in many cases its slower than a single card, so just be cautious." Might be the reason why a single car runs better than SLI.
