Good question. I would like to know, too. I'm gonna say no (just guessing).

Always best to reinstall, I would recommend it yes. With Win 7 I have heard of others getting away with not doing it but from what I remember you'd have to strip all the drivers before removing the HDD. And if memory serves me right that was with same brand of mobo (could be mistaken here), but back to your question, it's always better to reinstall.

I created a backup disk or whatever but from what I understand that wont suffice for doing a complete re-installation.

I believe you can to Microsoft and download it and than use your original key and it may also require a phone to MS where you can tell them you had a mobo failure and that you want to install on your new mobo. Look through the Windows thread a bit, I think this is where I came across this info. There's a link to the site and somebody else's post on the failed mobo thing and what to say so MS doesn't give you hard time about swapping system to another mobo. I knew I should have saved that link. Hope this of some help.

I did go to the Microsoft website and found out that if you have a PID number for your windows software you can request another copy through the mail for 30$ for those who did not know. Thanks for the help sandman.

Interesting Master Chief. I dont understand what all the controversy is then about having to do a clean install of windows 7 after a motherboard swap.

People like to do clean re-installs because you don't want your old motherboard chipsets etc. It just gets rid of the old stuff in order to make place for the new.
If you have an OEM version of windows you're *supposed* to get a new license key, however when I swapped out my mobo it never asked me for a new key, didn't even have to call Microsoft.
If it does ask for a key, even though technically the Microsoft reps aren't allowed to, they can re-activate your key for you.
