Iphone 3g question

Thread Starter
So right now i have a smartphone without a data plan on AT&T (before the forced data plans were made)
I have an unlocked iphone 3g laying around and i was wondering if i could put the sim card in the iphone without getting charged for the data plan?

If you don't use data, then sure.
But as soon as you use data, they will know and will add the plan to your bill.

Once AT&T networks recognizes you have a smart phone they'll auto add a data plan. I had a phone before the forced data and have had to call them twice and tell them not to put the data. My mom uses it as a regular phone, she doesn't know how to use any of the features so its a waste for her to have data or txt

Told them I was using a Nokia GoPhone (that I have and gave them the IMEI) insead of the blackberry curve 8300

Still every few months I'll get a bill where they auto add the data plan and have to call and tell them i'm not using it

I still have a smartphone without a data plan, so they will still add it even if i just switch sims? this is ridiculous.
