Random Freezes -Hardare or Software???

Thread Starter
Totally randomly, every now and then my system will just freeze, or the monitor will go blank. I notice that my G19 screen showing my Everest temps will list my GPU1 temp @ 0 degrees and then shortly after, or at the same time, the monitor will go blank or the system will freeze. A few times, I did get a BSOD, IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal error. Then I installed Ashampoo's WinOptimizer and thought I fixed the problem. Maybe I had two separate problems. Still, no BSOD, but the screen just went blank again forcing me to reset.

I know the problem is not my video card(s). I originally thought they were the problem and I did a warranty exchange through EVGA, so I now have two new GTX 260s. I have also swapped them top and bottom and still get the same issue with the GPU1 temp sensor going crazy showing 0 degrees. So is this my MB going bad?

ADDED INFORMATION:

Some interesting new information: I found a slight work-around to fix this. Keyword here is SLIGHT!

As I mentioned in the OP, my everest monitor on my G19 screen would randomly show 0 degrees and even 125 degrees C for a split second. Well I noticed my FAN Speed went to 0RPMs. ***?! This is after I swapped out for replacement VGAs under EVGAs lifetime warranty. So, I tinkered with my EVGA Precision settings and changed my fan speed down from 100% to 40% and the fan speed stabilized itself at 1400RPMs. I found this to be very weird since this is obviously what was happening to my original set of GTX 260s as well. I messed with the settings multiple times and for whatever reason, the fan would fail if I tried to run it at higher speeds. So with it set at 40% on EVGA Precision, all seems to be stable. BUT..! That doesn't necessarily mean I will be able to play games keeping that fan speed down at 1400RPMs either.

So, is this a software issue? If not, it must either be a power issue of my MB, or the PSU itself, right? So I've been monitoring my voltages through the night and all seems to be fine:
+12v = 12.36v - 12.32v
+5v = 5.02v - 5.03v
+3.3v = 3.31v
However..! My GPU1 VCC is only at 3.29v
The GPU2 VCC stays at 3.33v, so am I to understand that this 1 hundredth of a volt is enough to make my fan quit on my GPU1? Really?!

I also bought a used 790i Ultra SLI direct replacement for my MB from a guy here on forum. Thanks man! I'm curious to see if that MB was the culprit, OR if it is something else? I can't seem to wrap my head around that tiny bit of vdroop on the GPU1 VCC to be enough to cause this problem. So could this be software related?

I COULD REALLY USE SOME MORE INPUT ON THIS! Ps&Qs!

I would look into your RAM.
Try a different stick on each slot and try them with your computer at stock.

I had a problem like this once. It was RAM related.

You can also try using one card on different slots to see if you have a bad card/slot as well.

Always try it with everything is at stock though. So you ruled out a bad or degraded OC already.

Cheers~

Yeah, I've been running stock for a month or so now. No change. I don't have RAM to swap out and check. My brother might lend me a stick to try for a while. You don't think it could be the MB?

Well, before jumping on to the mobo's case, you should check the other components first.
Try what I told you. Because these things sounds like GPU/RAM problem.
If things are still bad, then it's possible now that you have a bad mobo.

Before you do anything, try this.

Depending on how many errors it finds and the size of your OS partition this could take anywhere from 20 minutes to a couple of hours to complete.

Some interesting information: I found a slight work-around to fix this.

Honestly, I wouldn't trust voltage monitoring software...it sucks and is never really accurate. On my two rigs my +12v is 9.14v and my +5v is 3.2v. With those voltages, it wouldn't even boot.

HOWEVER How long does the fan stay at 0RPM? I wouldn't worry much if it reads it as 0RPM for a split second or so, as it could be a glitch or something. But if you can actually confirm the fan stops or even slows down then we may have a problem.

Yeah, I did verify that the fan stops. The monitors are accurate. I have it set to refresh every second. The GPU Ambient temps also spikes way up and then back down when the fan starts back up. It lasts for a split second to a few seconds, to stuck off all together and then the system freezes. What the heck monitor are you using? Your crap AMD BIOS?

HW monitor and PC Wizard. The "crappy" AMD BIOS reads it correctly I think.
