It will take about a year for the fuel to cool down completely.

From what some scientists are saying it's more harmful to ingest plutonium/uranium than to inhale it... that's why it's so dangerous to have it in the water supply. With a half life of thousands of years, it will seep into the groundwater and travel far, over the course of thousands of years.

As far as I understand it the main danger with plutonium is thats is damn toxic, i.e., lethal even in very small quantities. Thats it happens to be radioactive as well is just cherry on top.

Yeah for the scientificly educated they will realise how dangerous this is. As for the other people who expect to get their news from the TV, they will find out in due time.

As for the fact that they have only released an article on the perminant closure of the plant is LAUGHABLE!......No '*****'!

It actually makes me feel sad how many people rely on TV to bring them their 'news'!

As for the people who belive in this 'low quantity' CRAP, its not the radiation that kills you its the cancer that does when it gets onto your skin or in your digestive system! A single Beta/Alpah particle in your system would be the equivilent of shotblasing your insides, over a period of time! This is without taking into account the Plutonium which has a half life of 24,100 years! Yes let me repeat that 24,100 years!

Why? Why would they bother doing that at all if there is no benefit of being able to keep the reactors functional afterwards. They could have safely let the cores go into melt down ages ago if this was the case.

It's not plutonium.

These plants aren't built to withstand a "Richter" scale.

Rather, they are built to withstand a certain threshold with respect to relative ground velocity. Anyone that says "this plant can withstand a 7.0 earthquake" knows nothing about it.

It's not plutonium.

Eddie.
........Of course not....... Theres no thing as a safe meltdown.

Most of these posts make me see how they are and WILL get away with this, then all the cancer victims will just be a footnote later on down the line!

Sodium is "damn toxic" and lethal even in very small quantities. (Do not try this at home.)

The primary concern with plutonium is that its got a stupidedly long half-life (i.e. around 24 thousand years) and how we can store this safely for many half-lives.
