On a serious note, I want to thank the two people that have been trying to settle things down here. I too think that our fear of Nuclear Power is over blown, fantastical, and going to lead to a very dismal future.

I have heard of that story about a large amount of people being exposed to radiation and not one getting cancer. That is crazy stuff (impressed). Thought hard to believe, I'm sure there are scenarios which would help us. What they say about the radiation creating causing the body to start a chemical reaction as a defense mechanism. That is no correct argument to say radiation should not be considered dangerous and to not worry so much about Japan.

Yes circuits can emit radiation, but also yes they are minimized through design and compliance reasons. (You cannot always trust compliance or regulatory statements either)

What I'm really trying to say is do not sway to far to one side (conspiracy theorist or blinded believer in the people in power are on your side). Always read more and question for yourself.

For god sake search peer reviewed journal articles. Stop relying so much on news and wiki. Though they can be good sources of information sometimes, even they cannot post what actually is in its raw form. (statements backed up with numbers, proper research, and choice of words) No matter what people say there is what is called politics. It is WAY to easy to find articles posted on the web that counter-dict each other. Just because it is cited, doesn't give it more weight either.

It is my understanding that the harm caused by all types of radiation is most directly associated with the function of DNA in the cell.

@charliehorse,

nice find. I like the prologue to the next article from that link:
Quote:
PLUTONIUM FOUND AT FUKUSHIMA!! Probably from old weapons tests thousands of miles away, but hey, let's wet ourselves anyway
Back a couple weeks ago, right after the tsunami, NPR (whom I normally cherish and respect) interviewed a Psychiatric PhD from NYU or JH about why the rest of the world has outpaced America regarding Nuclear Energy. He pretty much said that it is a direct effect of two occurrences; 1) our social reaction to Hiroshima / Nagasaki and 2) our social reaction to Three Mile Island. I am definitely NOT a learned scholar, but I would argue that there is a much bigger and more effective impetus behind our collective fear.

Popular Culture. After WWII, when America was rebuilding it's economy, Hollywood and New York started to generate massive economies based on movies and music. Over the ensuing years, there was a spate of movies based on the premise of some Nuclear Holocaust or Catastrophe. During the Sixties and Seventies the musicians and actors became involved as activists and started to harp on the horrors of Nuclear Power and Weaponry.

Now, I am not going to try to rationalize or justify Nuclear Weaponry. That is not the focus of this current argument anyway. However, I think that Hollywood and the popular musicians did more to drive home a fear of Nuclear Power than the bombings in Japan or the incident at Three Mile Island. I mean, I am a child of the Seventies and I can remember the No Nukes protests and how cool it was; heck, it was at the heart of the anti-establishment culture after Viet Nam wrapped up.

So, why aren't there more Nuclear Plants in the USA? Because Fear sells.

Question: Why were the reactors by the sea, in a land where the word "Tsunami" comes from?

Here is a great article about the Nuclear reactor in japan. This is more detailed then the average articles out there. It explains a lot of what other OCNers expressed as concerns and specific details. Japan is by no means out of trouble yet.

people the quake was an 8.9 or a 9.0. As compared to a 6.0, a 9.0 is 1000 times as intense.
