ASUS Rampage III Formula or Gigabyte G1 Sniper?

Thread Starter
I'm giving my DX58O in my sig rig, to a co-worker so im going to upgrade my x58 Board.

Im slowly Getting into PC Gaming, and Currently Have had no need to overclock my system, but I would like to be able to setup a nice moderate overclock at some point.

So I want a board with all the features, but dont need a $500+ super high OC board, like the rampage 3 black edition or X58A-OC

I Really Dont want to spend more than $300 on a board, but the extra cash doesnt bother me, if its worth it in the long run.

Ive Narrowed My Choices Down the

Asus Rampage III Formula
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-666-_-Product

Or

Gigabyte G1.Sniper
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128471

Current Rig is My Sig Rig. and I use spdif to my av reciver for audio, i dont plan on buying any expansion audio or nic cards, onboard only, and I'm currently leaning on an ASUS GTX 580 DirectCUII which takes 3 slots, but dont see myself ever going sli.

Originally I was dead set on the ASUS Rampage 3 Formula

Pro -It had a Good Intel Nic, and onboard Realtek Audio Chip, (compared to the RIII Extreme)

Pro -rog connect and good oc utitlies,

Pro -usb3/sata6,

Pro-has 7 PWM Fan connections, can bios controll all my fans in haf 932, plus room for more

ProHas good pci express placement for a three slot cooler

Con- I would have stick my OCZ Vertex2 on the intel 3GB sata port, due to issues all x58 boards have with the Marvel Sata 6 Ports.

But I just saw the Gigabyte G1 Killer Sniper Board and read some reviews on OCN about it

Pro - Apparently the G1 has a Newer Marvel Sata 6 Chip thats on par/better than the intel p67 sata6 chip

Pro-Has an awsome nic card, i download alot of files i say so any additonal network optimization is nice

Pro-onboard sound is even better

Pro-It has a USB 3.0 INternal Header, & comes with a front mount usb panel

Con-Only has 5 PWM fan connections, so no room for any addtl fans to connect onboard

Con-The color scheme is ok, but not a huge fan on the Gun look, kind of cheesy...I dont like the gun look

Con-No External BIOS Reset Button

Con-$140 More, But adding a separte nic and audio card to another board would cost more, so your paying for better onboard componets

...Hmmm...Which one would you go with...

Also does anything think any other MFG's might release a last Series of X58 Boards incorporating such tech as onboard usb 3.0 headers or the updated marvell sata 6 chip?

Rampage allways less cons, cheaper, better build and tend to last longer plus rma service is better in the small chance if it broken.

I just installed my Rampage III Formula this past week and have had no issues so far. It's been a great motherboard and very easy to overclock (which you should if you are gaming!!!). I've had no issues with my Crucial C300 SSD installed on a Sata III port. I just followed the recommendation of not installing the Marvel drivers after the initial Windows install and it's worked like a champ. I would definitely recommend the Rampage for sure.

I think im leaning back to the Ramapage after reading the Nic and the sound chip arent all that cracked up to be on the g1, and also it doesnt overclock any better at all, and I just figured that I already have more fans than headers on the g1 sniper and the asus has something like 7 fan headers.

I will make sure I use the windows drivers and not crappy marvell ones, i did read somewhere there drivers were the main issue.

Also after selling my dx58so, an e8500 proc i have, and some other cash im due...The Asus would be a $0 upgrade, which makes things even sweeter. Vs $150 out of pocket for the G1

i got the assassin and its a sick board, i love it, but of course it costs more. it OCes like every other X58 GB board OCes, like a beast. Id take it over the formula, but its personal choice. Totally different color schemes. i was able to push 231blck on my assassin, that is on air tho, probably could do more.

Its really brand preference at this point asus or gb its you pick. The asus is cheaper tho.

yea color is very important lol can't have a green PSU with green sleeving with a red board, or visa versa, it'll looks like a Christmas tree, unless you enjoy that.

When i used to mod cases, i would buy depending on color. Now i build around the board as its the most important component. many build around the GPU, or CPU, i pick the board.

since you got a vertex2 there is no point of the SATA 6.0gbps port just chuck it on the SATA II
