MSI 6950 2GB vs Sapphire 6950 2GB? Unlock? OC better?

Thread Starter

Hi OCN!

I was wondering which out of these 2 6950 are better. In terms of OCing it and in terms of higher chance (or if they're the same) or easier. I was considering a 6950 but there's so many choices and the MSI one seems to be cheaper. Also, should I wait instead for the prices to come down? Or should I jump on it now? Because I heard that they're going to change the card which makes them to not unlock?

Sapphire:

MSI:

How's everyone experience with these cards?

Thanks!

Both look to be reference cards but the pictures show that they have red pcbs. I'm not sure if the ones with red pcbs are the revised boards or if they can be unlocked. I bought my MSI 6950 from newegg and it has the black pcb. I'm running mine with the modded bios and OCed to 940/1400 at 1.2V.

Also read this thread.http://www.overclock.net/ati/946027-...omparison.html The 6950 just OCed is a great card and you wouldn't be losing anything if the card didn't unlock. I say you can't go wrong with both cards. I normally buy Sapphire cards but I got a MSI since it was cheaper.

It seems some non-reference cards do unlock like the MSI HD 6950 Twin Frozr III. http://www.overclock.net/ati/938974-...an-unlock.html

I have two msi 6950 flashed to 6970 bios and overlock to 950/1400 on stock 6970 voltage. And one is stable at 1025/1400. xfx card also stable at 950/1400 on 6970 voltage....dont think that really helped, but a reference card is a reference card I guess.

Newegg has the gigabyte 6950 for cheaper. [only 265]

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-356-_-Product

It's reference design as well, and in the techpowerup forums there hasn't been a failure with the gigabyte cards yet

I would buy from Newegg, but tax for a $200 card kills any deal I order from there. So basically, all reference cards are the same? Did they actually start rolling out the revised versions yet? I mean, I feel like a unlocked 6950 would be the best bang for buck which I think I might buy one now before they have the revised versions.

Also, could some direct me to a good OCing/Unlocking guide?

THANKS! =)

Also, what are the chances of frying the card with a high voltage? (good max voltage?)

Get the Sapphire one, it's much more reliable... When it comes to buying AMD/ATI GPUs, I would only buy XFX, and Sapphire (and maybe Gigabyte).

As for unlocking to a 6970, XFX cards are the best for that, but between the given choices, I bet on the Sapphire card.

We've got an in-house unlock guide

I bought the MSI card 2 weeks ago. No problems unlocking mine, can't comment on how it OC's since I haven't done any yet. Mine has a black PCB, and I haven't read anything about the red ones (regardless of who makes it) being any less likely to unlock.
