I got a new backup drive to keep as a pseudo real-time backup device to my boot drive.

Most (almost all) information I'm finding leads me back to the Microsoft troubleshooting site for the error.

I've tried repartitioning the drive, formatting it, unpartitioning and trying BEFORE the format, all to no avail. I gave up and tried simply mirroring the drive with DriveImage XML and the "could not lock drive" keeps coming up.

My buddy says a good workaround is booting from a USB linux OS and simply mirroring without windows even open. I could do this, but I really would like the ease of use of automatic backup.

Can anyone lend any advice?

do you have any shared items btw? Do you have any OS related items being copied? Do other backup software also have issues?

Oh, you know what...I did just create my first shared folder the other week. I'll turn that off and see what happens.

The Win 7 backup utility and DriveImage XML are the only two I've tried thus far.

And the copy includes everything on my boot drive - which is just a two-partition Windows boot (one for the main OS, then a Windows-created 100MB in-case-you-eff-up reserve)

The shared folder was on my laptop, not my desktop. So no shared items....what could be causing this?
